Elementary School Enrollment
Elementary school entrance date
Children begin elementary school on April 1 following the day they turned six years old.
(Children born between April 2 and April 1 of the following year are placed in the same academic year.)
E.g. First graders entering in FY2023 are children born between April 2, 2016 and April 1, 2017.

School enrollment notice
Families with children entering elementary school will receive a “School Enrollment Notice” around January. Please bring this notice to the school entrance ceremony. (Be careful not to lose it as it encloses important documents.)
Main pre-enrollment events
- Pre-enrollment checkup (late September to early October): Includes health checkups, intelligence tests, and language tests needed for enrollment. (Notices will be sent by the Board of Education.)
- One-day trial enrollment (February): Children visit their designated elementary school for a trial experience. (Information will be provided by the school.)
If you move after receiving the Enrollment Notice
If you move after receiving the School Enrollment Notice, enroll your child in a private school in another municipality, or wish to attend Hokkaido International School Niseko, please contact the Board of Education.

Junior High School Enrollment

Transferring to Elementary and Junior High School in Niseko Town
- Please ask for a "Enrollment Certificate" and a "Textbook Certificate" at your current school.
- When completing your move-in procedures to Niseko Town Hall, submit these certificates to the Board of Education counter. The Board will issue a Transfer Enrollment Notice, which you should bring to the new school.
- If you plan to move your child into a Niseko school, please contact the Board of Education in advance. If you come without prior notice, issuing the Transfer Enrollment Notice may take time. Also, if you will live outside walking distance, arrangements for the school bus may require advance coordination.
Notice for foreign residents: In order to enroll your child at a Niseko Town school, you must be registered as a resident in Niseko Town. Please note that there are also private international schools in Niseko.

Transferring to Elementary and Junior High Schools Outside Niseko Town
- Please inform your child’s current school in advance of the planned transfer. The school will notify the Board of Education, so parents do not need to contact the Board directly.
- Please obtain an "Enrollment Certificate" and a "Textbook Certificate" from your current school, and submit them to the school and/or municipal office at your new address. For further details, please consult the Board of Education in your new municipality.
