Yubari City Museum Collection Art Exhibition Art Heritage of Coal City · Yubari

Masao Kobayashi

In 1888 (Meiji 21), a coal layer was discovered in the forested area of the deep valley where the Sihirokabetsu River was scraped. Through its discovery, coal mine facilities were built in narrow valleys in just a few years, coal mine houses crowded together on the slope of the valley that faces it, a coal mine was formed. As the population increases, cultural and artistic activities are also exciting, centering on coal miners. In art activities, "Yubari Art Association" was formed in 1930 (Showa 5 years). After the war an art group was born from the circle activity of the coal mining labor union, and active activities were carried out.

Yubari City Museum of Art was opened in 1979 (Showa 54) in order to collect and publish works of writers involved in art activities by Yubari, and to provide a place for presentations. However, the roof collapsed due to snowfall in February 2012 (Heisei 24). Unfortunately we are closed because of the financial collapse of Yubari city two years ago. Fortunately there is no damage to the work and it is still kept in Yubari city facilities.
Coal produced from Yubari continued to support Japan's industrial development from the fundamentals, being supplied to the steel and power stations nationwide from the Meiji era to the high economic growth stage. As mentioned above, the work group that conveys the long story of Coal City · Yubari who continued to support the Japanese industry is not limited to the cultural heritage of Yubari city, and it should also be widely known.

Niseko Town has two hydroelectric power plants that supply electricity to paper mills from the Taisho era, and has a common feature that Yubari is an energy producing area. In recent years, Niseko Town has taken a regional energy cycle policy, such as the use of geothermal heat, and is also an area that has a strong interest in the form of energy.

Writer Akira Arishima left the philosophy of "Mutual aid" to the land of Niseko. By the closing of Yubari City Art Museum, the collection exhibition lost opportunity for exhibition. To introduce works widely in this manner is a mutual aid between cultural facilities and embodies Arijima's "mutual aid".

In this exhibition, works such as Mr. Masao Kobayashi and Tetsuo Hatakeyama who drew a lot of scenery of coal mine from Yubari City Museum collection work, Mr. Mushio Mushimo who is familiar with Takeo Arishima, oil paintings of writers who are in Yubari and Hokkaido, Watercolor , Books, three-dimensional works and so on. From here, I would be pleased if you reconfirm the energy "coal" that played a major role in modernizing Japan and the fertile collection of Yubari City Art Museum.
