Status of Research on Regional Club Activities
Overview
Until now, sports club activities have ensured opportunities for students to become familiar with sports, and through activities in which students participate voluntarily and proactively, they have contributed to the acquisition of a sense of accomplishment, the improvement of learning motivation, a sense of responsibility, and the cultivation of a sense of solidarity; and has played a major role in contributing to the development of autonomy.
In addition, through club activities, in the course of interacting with people of different ages, we aim to build relationships between students and teachers, and students themselves increase their self-affirmation through activities. It is also a meaningful activity for school management, such as grasping the situation of participating students, improving motivation, and suppressing the occurrence of problem behavior.
In addition, it has greatly contributed to increasing the trust of students and parents in the school, as well as fostering a sense of unity and love for the school.
On the other hand, the situation of sports club activities in schools has become increasingly active in recent years, especially in terms of sustainability.
In Japan, the total population has already entered a phase of decline, and the number of junior high school students is declining at an accelerated pace. In addition, in sports club activities at junior high schools, etc., teachers who have no experience in playing sports have no choice but to guide them, and teachers are required to lead sports club activities including holidays, lead competitions, and participate in the operation. It has become a heavy burden.
Discussions regarding school sports club activities have been held at the national level, and in the "Club Activity Reform in Light of School Work Style Reform" issued by the Japan Sports Agency in September 2020, it was stated that "From 2023, we will aim to gradually transfer weekend club activities to local areas, and teachers who do not wish to instruct weekend club activities will not be involved in weekend club activities."
In October 2021, a "Study Group on the Regional Transition of Athletic Club Activities" was established, and after eight meetings, a "Recommendation" was compiled in June 2022.
