Niseko High School students take part in the "AI x SDGs Exploration Frontier Lab" course.

Topic of town

Second-year students from Niseko High School visited Hokkaido University on September 17th as part of their comprehensive inquiry-based learning time and participated in the "AI x SDGs Inquiry Frontier Lab" course.

The collaborative project with Hokkaido University's Sustainability Promotion Organization will begin in fiscal year 2025. Niseko High School has been selected as a DX High School by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and this year they are newly piloting inquiry-based learning using "FUTURE COMPASS," an AI inquiry-based learning support tool developed by Mirai Education Co., Ltd. (MIRAIE). This time, a class was held as part of the collaborative project with Hokkaido University with the cooperation of MIRAIE.

On this day, we had lectures from Makoto Demura, Special Advisor to the President of Hokkaido University, on the theme of "The Use of AI in Research Activities and the SDGs," and from Masahiro Mizuno, CEO of MIRAIE, on the theme of "Creating the Future of the Region Together with AI."
Furthermore, based on the theme of "High school students' vision for the future of Niseko," which Mayor Tanaka announced in a video message, a workshop was held with the cooperation of Hokkaido University student volunteers. The students were divided into eight groups and, based on AI information and group discussions, developed action plans for the region, which they then presented. Facilitator Nobuhiro Kanai, a specially appointed associate professor at the Hokkaido University Sustainability Promotion Organization, emphasized that human thoughts, emotions, and actions that AI cannot understand are essential for implementing the action plans, and encouraged the high school students, as befits high school students in Niseko Town pioneering municipality in community self-governance, to deepen their research activities.

Through lectures and workshops, students developed their ability to effectively use AI. They also gained an opportunity to realize the importance of deepening their inquiry through dialogue. Going forward, we will continue to explore research topics in depth during our comprehensive inquiry time.
