Earthquake information and tsunami warnings
At around 11:15 last night (8th), a large earthquake occurred with its epicenter off the east coast of Aomori Prefecture, and strong shaking of a seismic intensity of 6+ was observed in Aomori Prefecture.
A magnitude 3 earthquake was also observed in Niseko Town.
The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued a tsunami warning for Hokkaido, Aomori Prefecture, and Iwate Prefecture, then switched it to a tsunami advisory, and lifted all warnings at 6:20 a.m.
 気象庁はこれらの地域で今後、多少の潮位の変化が続く可能性があるとしていますが、被害の心配はないとしています。

◆ Hokkaido/Sanriku Offshore Earthquake Warning Information
In response to this earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a "Late Earthquake Warning for the area off the coast of Sanriku, Hokkaido" at 2 a.m. today (9th).
This is the first time this information has been released since the system began operations in December 2022.
This information calls for disaster prevention, as there is a relatively higher possibility than usual of a major earthquake occurring along the Kuril Trench and Japan Trench in relation to this earthquake.
Specifically, although advance evacuation is not required, people are required to check their evacuation sites and routes, prepare emergency evacuation bags, secure furniture to prevent it from falling over, and check their stockpiles of food, water, toilets, and other supplies.
Detailed information on the Hokkaido/Sanriku Offshore Late Earthquake Warning can be found on the websites of the Cabinet Office and the Japan Meteorological Agency. (Note 1)

Beware of hoaxes and fake news
When a major disaster like this occurs, rumors and fake news can spread on social media.
When it comes to information, please verify primary information released by the Japan Meteorological Agency and government agencies yourself, and be sure to check secondary, tertiary, and hearsay information carefully, and be careful not to spread it around easily.
Niseko Town will continue to provide relevant information on its website, LINE, Facebook, and other channels.
(Information as of 8:00 AM on the 9th)
