This is one of the greatest Japanese films, and the only surviving film by the genius director Sadao Yamanaka, who died young at the age of 28. Unlike previous Tange Sazen films, which were filled with murderous intent, this film has the feel of a period drama, recreating Sazen in a humorous and warm-hearted way.
