Born in Tokyo (now Tokyo) in 1878 (Meiji 11). After graduating from Gakushuin secondary school, he entered Sapporo Agricultural School. In 1903 (Meiji 36), studied abroad in the United States. In 1906 (Meiji 39), he traveled to Europe with his brother, a painter Imaima Arishima, who had studied abroad in Italy. He returned to Japan the following year and took a teaching position at Tohoku Imperial University Agricultural University, the successor to Sapporo Agricultural School. Also at this time, he became a member of "Shirakaba" with Musashikoji, Atsushi, Naoya Shiga, and his brother and author Satomi Shira, and began to publish works. In 1916 (Taisho 5), his wife and father died one after another, and retired from Agricultural University the following year. Since this time, he has released works such as "Descendants of Cain", "To the Little One", "Birthless Birth", "A Woman", and "Ichibun no Grape", and has established himself as a writer at the literary stage. In addition to novels, she writes in a wide variety of areas, including fairy tales, plays, social reviews, and art reviews. 1922 (Taisho 11), seeking unification of thought and real life, free release of "Arishima Farm" owned mainly by absent land in Karita, Hokkaido (now Niseko Town) on the premise that tenants share land. .
