Hospital

In Japan, hospitals are broadly classified as either General Hospitals with multiple departments or Private Hospitals. Most hospitals (except dental clinics) do not accept reservations. To inform the doctor of your symptoms, it is advisable that you take a Japanese speaker with you. Details of how to make an initial visit to a hospital are listed below.
Fill in a first visit form, present it with your health insurance card, and wait in the waiting room until your name is called.
A medical interview sheet regarding symptoms, medical history and allergies is completed by the patient or a nurse who asks questions about them. When your name is called, enter the doctor's office and receive treatment and a diagnosis. Follow the doctor's instructions as to whether examination is necessary.
When the consultation is finished, wait in the waiting room until your name is called again, and make a payment at the designated window. Usually, medicine is given at a designated pharmacy upon presentation of a prescription. (You have to pay the gull amount of medical costs incurred if you do not have a health insurance card. Take a travel insurance certificate if you have one.)

In case of sudden illness

Call an ambulance if you cannot go to the hospital by yourself due to sudden illness or an accident, or if you think it is an emergency. The telephone number is 119. If you are not fluent in Japanese, ask a Japanese speaker to make the call.
