School education

In Japan, it is mandatory for all children to attend elementary school for six years and junior high school for three years. No tuition and fees for textbooks are charged. Children of a foreign nationality are not required to attend school but may enter if desired. The town has two elementary schools, a junior high school and a highschool. To go on to the high school, students must take an entrance examination. The school year starts in April and ends in March of the following year. All classes are conducted in Japanese. For parents seeking an education for their children in English, there is also an International School in Niseko Town.
