Niseko Town is located almost in the center of the Shiribeshi region. Situated in a hilly basin surrounded by mountains, the town is traversed by the Shiribetsu River and is characterized by a continental climate with large temperature fluctuations.
Due to these climatic conditions and topography, a wide variety of crops are cultivated and harvested, and each one tastes exquisite. Tomatoes, melons, broccoli, corn, and more—a colorful array of vegetables awaits you at the direct sales outlets.
Furthermore, mountains and rivers are very much a part of daily life. There are plenty of activities and experiences that allow you to feel nature firsthand, as well as hot springs.
In this way, abundant nature not only provides us with delicious blessings, but also offers us entertainment and healing.
Now, as someone in charge of public relations and public gathering, I've noticed something about summer in Niseko Town: "There are tons of events happening in the summer!"
Every weekend, delicious aromas fill the air, joyful voices can be heard, and events are held all over town, bringing smiles to everyone's faces. In addition, there are many facilities where you can enjoy activities and experience crafting, and the variety of these is extensive.
During this interview, I had so many discoveries, like "I didn't know there was this kind of fun!", "Oh, that event exists!", and "This looks like a fun way to do it!". It's a shame I can't introduce them all.

I rode a tuk-tuk for the first time during my internship!

I rode in a tuk-tuk for the first time. The breeze felt great, and it was a different kind of comfort compared to riding in a car. Because there are no doors or windows, you can appreciate the scenery more clearly, making it a great experience. If you're getting around Niseko Town, I think a tuk-tuk is more enjoyable than a car because you can experience nature more directly!

The ingredients are mixed, the batter is applied to a stick, and it's baked while being rotated. If too much batter is applied, it will drip, and if it's baked too carefully and for too long, the batter will become hard. You can catch a glimpse of each person's preference for how they bake it, and the conversation flows easily, making it a fun and lively experience.
"There are two flavors: chocolate and caramel. We recommend trying it as a group and mixing the batters together before baking," said Ms. Furukawa from Nature Life. We then proceeded to create the layers while Ms. Furukawa instructed us on how to bake them properly.
It's a precious experience to be able to eat a freshly baked, warm Baumkuchen that's crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Choose the shape you want to make, such as a keychain or coin purse, place the metal mold onto the leather, and hammer it in with a wooden mallet to create the imprint. It may look difficult at first glance, but even children can do it, so you can enjoy making it with your family.
"I enjoy the process of creating, and every time I look at the finished product, those memories come flooding back. The beauty of leather is that you can remember it even after time has passed," said Nakamura from fanfun. They have many repeat customers, and many people create things that are uniquely their own.
The joy of creating your own unique pattern after engrossing the engraving process is a wonderful experience that can be shared with family and friends.

2. Selecting "Health Insurance Card" will allow you to verify your medical insurance eligibility information.
3. In the eligibility information, the "Co-payment rate" and the "Application category" column in the "Information related to the Certificate of Eligibility for Limit Application" section will show the "Limit category."
Regarding the renewal of National Health Insurance eligibility documents, etc.
Those enrolled in the National Health Insurance will receive eligibility documents by mail during July. The type of eligibility document sent will vary depending on your usage of your My Number Insurance Card.

The new certificate will be sent before its expiration date.
A request to everyone regarding the dispatch of the certificates
Certificates of eligibility (for national health insurance and elderly care) and medical benefit certificates (for children, single-parent families, and those with severe physical and mental disabilities) will be sent by "simple registered mail".
If you cannot receive the simplified registered mail due to your absence, the courier puts the delivery slip in the mailbox, takes it back to the post office, and keeps it at the post office for one week from the delivery date. If you received an absentee notification slip, please contact the post office within the deadline to request redelivery (or receive it at the counter).
If you do not contact the post office and the storage period expires, the mail will be returned to the Niseko Town Hall. Depending on the delivery date, it may take more than a week after the delivery notice is left for the mail to be returned to the town hall, which will cause delays in delivery.
We would appreciate your cooperation in ensuring that the new certificate reaches you by the end of July.
If you are unable to receive your certificate during mid- to late-July due to reasons such as being away from home, please contact the office as soon as possible.

If you cannot receive the simplified registered mail due to your absence, the courier puts the delivery slip in the mailbox, takes it back to the post office, and keeps it at the post office for one week from the delivery date. If you received an absentee notification slip, please contact the post office within the deadline to request redelivery (or receive it at the counter).
If you do not contact the post office and the storage period expires, the mail will be returned to the Niseko Town Hall. Depending on the delivery date, it may take more than a week after the delivery notice is left for the mail to be returned to the town hall, which will cause delays in delivery.

Freely roaming around at the town-run ranch
37 cows entered the pasture.
Under clear skies, cattle were brought into the town-run pasture for grazing.
The cows arrived by truck from local dairy farmers. Some were reluctant to move due to the unfamiliar environment, but all 37 cows successfully entered the pasture.
The cows, released into the vast pasture, seemed to be enjoying their time in their own way, running around energetically, strolling about, and leisurely eating their feed. They will spend the coming autumn at the town-run pasture before returning to their respective farms, having grown larger.

Adding a touch of splendor to the gateway to Niseko Town
Niseko Kirakaido planting
The NPO Niseko Community Development Forum organized a tree-planting activity along Kira Kaido Street, and about 50 people, including residents living along Kira Kaido Street and townspeople, gathered for the event.
On this day, we planted flower seedlings in the flowerbeds and set up benches along the road. Also, on June 3rd, we made hanging baskets and decorated the streetlights along Kira Kaido. Please enjoy the colorful flowers that will bloom from now until summer during your walks and commutes.

Athletic park opening sports event
The opening sports tournament for the sports season was held at the sports park. This year, a park golf competition was held, with 13 participants, including Mayor Tanaka and Chairman Aoba, engaging in fierce competition.
The participants enjoyed a round of golf on a course with clear skies and excellent views of Mount Yotei. They seemed to be enjoying the competition, experiencing a range of emotions with each shot. The winners of this year's park golf competition are as follows:

Niseko elementary school rice planting experience
Fifth and sixth graders from Niseko Elementary School participated in a rice planting experience at the rice paddy of Toshinori Ohashi in Satomi, with support from town hall staff and members of the regional revitalization cooperation team.
Under the scorching sun, which made the adults exclaim "It's hot!", the children enjoyed planting rice with cool expressions on their faces.
Despite the challenges of losing seedlings and planting them in a straight line, we managed to fill the large rice paddy with seedlings. We plan to harvest and hull the rice in the fall.

Comprehensive cooperation agreement with Hokkaido Chuo Bus Co., Ltd.
The town and Hokkaido Chuo Bus Co., Ltd. have signed a comprehensive partnership agreement with the aim of contributing to sustainable town development and regional revitalization by collaborating and cooperating while utilizing the unique resources and initiatives of each company. In addition to promoting tourism, the agreement outlines areas of cooperation such as transportation and infrastructure development and the promotion of sports activities.
At the signing ceremony, Mayor Tanaka said, "We want to deepen our cooperation more than ever before and work together to create a sustainable town."

Reflecting on Takeo Arishima
Zodiac signature concert
In commemoration of the anniversary of Takeo Arishima's death on June 9th, Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum held a constellation memorial concert titled "A Moment of Sound Filled with Light."
In the first part, familiar songs such as "Gunjō" and "Kimi o Nosete" were performed, and in the second part, more formal pieces such as "Drinking Song" from the opera "La Traviata" were performed.
A beautiful opera piece was performed. The venue was filled with a refreshing atmosphere thanks to the beautiful harmonies of soprano Maya Takahashi, tenor Sota Aoyama, and baritone Tsukasa Ohno, and the pleasant piano music of Yuka Yamada.

The Niseko Elementary and Kondo Elementary School sports day, which had been postponed the previous day due to rain, was held successfully the following day.
At Niseko Elementary School, this year the students were divided into combined teams of the Red and Yellow teams, and combined teams of the Blue and White teams, and fierce battles unfolded.
At Kondo Elementary School, the traditional unicycling performance was showcased, with students demonstrating skillful riding and helping each other during the routine.
There were many events open to the public, and children and adults alike were cheering together and enjoying the competitions.

What is "frailty"?
Do you feel that your physical strength and muscle mass are gradually declining as you age? The intermediate state between being healthy and needing care is called "frailty." Frailty can be reversed and returned to a healthy state if it is recognized early and countermeasures are taken.
Are you okay? Let's try the "ring test."
Make a circle with your thumbs and index fingers and surround the widest part of your calf.
- Gaps (or a tight fit)... This may indicate a risk of frailty.
- If you can't surround it... that's proof you have strong muscles.
Three key points for preventing frailty that you can start doing right now
Let's add just a little something to our daily lives.
1. [Exercise] Let's develop a habit of moving.
- Take a slightly longer route on your usual walk and walk for an extra 5 minutes.
• We recommend increasing your activity level through "exercise while doing other things." The key is to incorporate it into your daily routine, such as "standing up from a chair 5 times while watching TV" or "marching in place while talking on the phone."
2. [Nutrition] Eat well to maintain muscle mass!
Make sure to include protein sources like meat, fish, soy products, and eggs in every meal.
Meals taste better when you eat them with someone, rather than eating alone.
3. [Social Participation] Connect with others!
・Create opportunities to get outside, such as joining local community groups, hobby clubs, or exercise classes.
Conversing with others contributes to mental well-being and brain activity.

For this reason, it has been a long-standing tradition to eat nutrient-rich eel to help get through the hot summer. One skewer of eel contains enough vitamin A to provide an adult with their daily requirement.

We planted vegetables again this year in the field behind Yoji Centre. Every year, the older children discuss and decide what to plant.
This year, we planted cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, potatoes, and many other vegetables, including popcorn and edamame. We've also done the weeding and watering ourselves, taking great care of them. In the summer, these vegetables will be on the school lunch menu, allowing all the children to enjoy fresh and delicious produce. I wonder how this year's harvest will turn out?

As part of this initiative, on May 21st, second-year students from Niseko Junior High School gave a presentation to fifth and sixth graders at Sapporo Municipal Okurayama Elementary School, sharing the charms of Niseko Town.
In our first year, we conducted activities such as listening to local residents and researching Niseko Town, and we also discussed how to communicate and what to convey. This time, we took advantage of the opportunity to visit Sapporo during our overnight training to share the charms of Niseko Town that we rediscovered.

Hello everyone. The school festival is approaching, and we, the student council, are at the heart of the school's preparations.
This year, we've been able to build on last year's experience and plan our preparations systematically, looking one step ahead. We truly feel that the trial and error we went through has contributed to our growth. For me, this will be my last school festival, both as a member of the student council and as a high school student. I'm working hard with my teammates, enjoying the process while making sure I have no regrets.
This year's school festival theme is "Heart-Pounding." On the day of the festival, we students will be excited and thrilled, not only for all of you who come to visit, but also for ourselves, as we deliver the fruits of our hard work and express our gratitude. Hello everyone. The school festival is approaching, and we, the student council, are at the heart of the school's preparations.
This year, we've been able to build on last year's experience and plan our preparations systematically, looking one step ahead. We truly feel that the trial and error we went through has contributed to our growth. For me, this will be my last school festival, both as a member of the student council and as a high school student. I'm working hard with my teammates, enjoying the process while making sure I have no regrets.
This year's school festival theme is "Heart-Pounding." On the day of the festival, we students will be excited and thrilled, not only for all of you who come to visit, but also for ourselves, as we deliver the fruits of our hard work and express our gratitude. We will do our best to make this a school festival that will bring excitement to the hearts of everyone who has always supported us. We look forward to seeing many of you on July 11th.

Japanese Taiko Drumming Group "Niseko Aikokai Hachisho"
Niseko Aikokai Yawara was established in the fall of 2023 and joined the Niseko Town Cultural Association in 2025. Although it is a relatively new group, the group's name, Yawara, means "to bring smiles to all directions (all aspects and people)," and the group is actively working to bring smiles to everyone's faces and liven up the town through taiko drumming. The members range in age and age, from those who want to get some light exercise to those who aim to improve their taiko drumming skills.

On May 20th, the Japanese Language Salon held a special event called "Spring Stroll." After the class, participants took a walk around town with Japanese volunteers. Their destinations included pharmacies and train stations, and while searching for them, they challenged themselves to correctly ask for the names and meanings of things in Japanese. Under the guidance of the volunteers, the participants learned many new words while actually conversing.

Activities of a town development company!

A scallop-shaped road has opened in the woods of Niseko Mirai!
At the northern edge of the Niseko Mirai residential area lies a mixed forest. While most of the trees are native birch and willow, there are also larch, maple, cherry, and oak trees. Since acquiring this forest, we have thinned it twice in the last few years, creating a pleasant forest space. At this opportune moment, with the hope that it will become a place where local residents can take walks and cool off in the summer, and where children can play, we have laid out a walking path with the cooperation of Hikobayu!
The walking path is paved with roadbed material made from recycled scallop shells from the neighboring town of Toyoura. This makes it easy to enter the woods even when the bamboo grass grows thick in the summer. In the future, we plan to hold nature games and other activities for children to enjoy at this location.

It's packed with the latest information, including recommended ways to eat them and vegetables that will be arriving soon!

Radio Niseko exterior wall construction
In early June, Radio Niseko underwent exterior painting work. Scaffolding was erected and covered, so anyone who saw Radio Niseko during the construction might have wondered what was going on. The painting was done thoroughly, down to the last detail.

Creating value together with the forest
Niseko Yukimori Kosha participated in the Yamago Festival (Otaru City) held in June, selling wooden products. We had many encounters and connections with event organizers, seedling suppliers, woodworkers, shop owners, and more. It was a two-day event where we felt a strong sense of accomplishment, realizing that new value is being created for forests and trees through these human connections.
Additionally, the Niseko View Plaza roadside station has started selling the products that were featured at the event. This allows residents of the town to also get their hands on the wood products from Yukimori Kosha.
From the forest
This year in the forests of Niseko, Japanese elm and Japanese elm trees are bearing many seeds. While most trees produce seeds in the fall, these are rare trees that bear fruit before summer arrives.
From the scene
We've started operating our sawmill again this year. Sawmilling is an essential process for utilizing the trees rescued from the forests and residential areas of Niseko for manufacturing. We also welcome inquiries regarding timber.

Overall activity report
Kira highway planting
The annual planting of flowers along Kira Kaido took place on May 31st, and we members of the volunteer corps also participated. Together with the townspeople, we planted flowers in the flowerbeds along Kira Kaido, making both sides of the road vibrant with flowers.
This planting along Kira Kaido was the first event support for the new recruits who joined in April and May. They seemed nervous at first, but they quickly warmed up to the townspeople and enjoyed working together. I think it also helped to bridge the gap between us third-year members and the new recruits.
In June, we'll also be creating and installing hanging baskets. I'm looking forward to seeing Kira Kaido become even more colorful with flowers.
From summer to autumn, you can also enjoy the changing colors of the flowers we planted! We hope that many people will enjoy the colorful scenery of Kira Kaido, which is so typical of Niseko Town. (Junichi Oba)

We will be serving curry and dishes made with local vegetables.

Nice to meet you. I'm assigned to Agricultural Policy Division and work at Niseko Yukimori Kosha.
Before coming to Niseko Town, I studied extensively about forests and wood-related industries at a forestry vocational school in Gifu Prefecture. I felt that the only place to put that knowledge into practice was Hokkaido, with its abundant nature and harmonious lifestyle, so I came to Niseko Town as a member of the Regional Revitalization Cooperation Team.
Yukimori Kosha handles various tasks, including procedures and tool rentals necessary for forest maintenance, and initiatives to enhance the value of felled timber through crafting.
We are still in the early stages of learning and there are many things we are unfamiliar with, but we are growing every day while receiving the blessings of the wonderful nature of Niseko Town.

Nice to meet you. This year, my daughters have left home, and I have come to Niseko Town alone, leaving my wife in Tokyo. It has been about 20 years since I last lived in Hokkaido, and it is my first time living in Niseko. I am excited and also healed every day by my work at the town hall, the diverse and unique members of the volunteer corps, and the quiet environment surrounded by Mt. Yotei, the Niseko mountain range, and Mt. Konbu.
From June onwards, I look forward to spending weekends in the Shiribetsu River system, where the snowmelt has subsided, wearing rubber boots, casting my fly, and enjoying the company of the fish.
First and foremost, through my work at the town hall and the central warehouse complex, I will cherish the daily encounters with many people and enjoy my life so that I can firmly establish myself as Niseko Town for a long time to come. Thank you for your support.

Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Yuki Shoji, and I've been assigned to the Niseko Children's Center.
I was born and raised in Tokyo, but I came to Niseko Town because I wanted to start a new life in a nature-rich environment. First, I want to get to know the local area little by little, cherish my relationships with everyone, and get used to life in this town.
My hobbies include relaxing in hot springs and saunas, and I'd like to explore various spots in and around town. I also want to enjoy running and snowboarding while experiencing the nature of Niseko Town.

I was born and raised in Tokyo, but I came to Niseko Town because I wanted to start a new life in a nature-rich environment. First, I want to get to know the local area little by little, cherish my relationships with everyone, and get used to life in this town.
My hobbies include relaxing in hot springs and saunas, and I'd like to explore various spots in and around town. I also want to enjoy running and snowboarding while experiencing the nature of Niseko Town.

Applications are now being accepted for Niseko Town Decarbonization and Renewable Energy Promotion Project subsidy.
The town will subsidize a portion of the costs for residents and businesses within the town who install renewable energy equipment such as solar power generation systems, energy-saving equipment, or build new homes that meet the Niseko Standard and Nearly ZEH+ standards. Disaster prevention radio automatic start training
In conjunction with the nationwide simultaneous information transmission test of the Japan Emergency Alert System (J-ALERT), the town will conduct an automatic activation drill for disaster prevention radios. To quickly inform residents of emergency information announced by the national government, the disaster prevention radios will be automatically activated in conjunction with J-ALERT.
When it is time for the drill, a loud voice will be broadcast from the disaster prevention radio. Please be careful not to make a mistake as this is a drill.

Important Notice
There is now less than a year until the first deadline for registering the inheritance.

The town collects used small household appliances in order to improve recycling and reduce waste.
Small electrical appliances (products powered by household electricity or batteries) contain valuable metals such as iron, aluminum, precious metals, and rare metals, which can be recycled as resources. Therefore, we aim to create a resource cycle by collecting used small electrical appliances and recycling them as metal resources through government-certified businesses. If you have any small electrical appliances that you no longer need at home, please cooperate with our collection program.
We also collect used lithium-ion batteries, such as those found in mobile batteries, so please bring them in.
*Small appliances cannot be collected from people, businesses, offices, or stores outside the town.

Please cooperate with water pipe leak investigations
The town will be conducting leak investigations in parts of the town from this month through October. During the investigation, staff will enter your property, so we ask for your understanding and cooperation.
how do i investigate?
A leak detector is applied to the water meter buried around the building such as a house. A leak detector detects the faint vibration sound that occurs when water leaks. A survey can be completed in minutes.
The actual survey will be conducted by employees of a company contracted by the town. They will always work in pairs, wear vests provided by the town (Photo 1), and carry identification cards issued by the town (Photo 2). Please note that they will always ask you before conducting the survey, but if you are not present, the survey will proceed as planned. We appreciate your understanding.
Furthermore, if any potential water leaks are discovered on the property, we will immediately explain the situation.

Important Notice
To all landowners
Farmland is a limited and valuable resource for ensuring a stable food supply in a region, and landowners and tenants have a responsibility to use it appropriately and efficiently. While there are no penalties, it is not permissible to leave currently cultivated farmland unused.
Therefore, once a year, Agricultural Committee conducts an on-site inspection of all farmland by local agricultural committee members to survey the current state of farmland use. This may involve entering your farmland or speaking with you, and we ask for your cooperation (this year, it will be from late July to August). If, as a result of this survey, the farmland is found to be neglected and overgrown, Agricultural Committee will send you a survey regarding your intention to use the land.
Agricultural Committee cannot issue a non-agricultural land certificate for farmland that has been included in the survey of land use intentions. Please manage the farmland to prevent it from becoming overgrown, such as by mowing grass and tilling. If you are unable to cultivate the farmland yourself, please contact us and we will help you find someone who can.
Furthermore, if you wish to use farmland for purposes other than agriculture (such as building construction, soil extraction, or material storage), you will need permission from Agricultural Committee (or the Governor of Hokkaido if the area exceeds 4 hectares). There are certain types of farmland that may not be permitted for use, depending on the purpose and location, such as large-scale, high-quality farmland or land where the intended purpose can be achieved through construction other than agriculture. Unauthorized use is subject to penalties. If you have a business plan, please consult with Agricultural Committee as early as possible, as the application and approval process can take time.

This year's Niseko Town War Dead Memorial Service is scheduled for Friday, July 17th, in the small hall of the Town Community Center, and will be held for members of the bereaved families association only. Typhoon Preparation
August and September are the months with the highest number of typhoons. These typhoons can approach and make landfall in Hokkaido while maintaining their strength, causing disasters such as heavy rain, landslides, river flooding, strong winds, high waves, and storm surges. When a typhoon is approaching and there is a risk of disaster, the meteorological observatory will issue weather forecast information (Typhoon No. ○) and call for vigilance and caution.
To prepare for typhoons, use hazard maps and other resources created and distributed by your local municipality during normal times to understand the types of disasters likely to occur around your home and to confirm evacuation routes. Also, confirming how to obtain evacuation information issued by your local municipality and disaster prevention weather information released by the meteorological observatory is another important part of your preparation.
The Japan Meteorological Agency website offers a service called "Disaster Prevention Information for Your City," which allows you to check disaster prevention weather information relevant to your city or town on a single page.

Cabbage, cucumbers, radishes, Chinese cabbage, tomatoes, onions, etc. All of these vegetables are designated as "designated vegetables." "Designated vegetables" are vegetables whose consumption is relatively high or is expected to increase, and which belong to categories specified by government ordinance based on their type and normal shipping season (Article 2 of the Vegetable Production and Shipment Stabilization Act). In 1966, there were six designated vegetables as listed above, but the number has increased year by year, and in 2026, broccoli was newly added, bringing the total to 15 items.
The advantage of designated vegetables is that they are eligible for the Vegetable Price Stabilization Program, which provides subsidies to producers when prices fall significantly (Article 10 of the same law). This allows producers to plan their production and stabilize shipments, making the vegetables more accessible to consumers. Broccoli was newly designated as a vegetable because its planted area and shipment volume have increased significantly compared to 10 years ago. In particular, in Hokkaido, the planted area has increased by about 1.3 times and the shipment volume by about 1.2 times. In the future, it is likely to become an even more familiar vegetable in daily life. By the way, my favorite is deep-fried broccoli as a topping for soup curry.

Subsidies for the installation and maintenance of septic tanks (additional applications accepted)
We are accepting additional applications for subsidies for installation costs for private residences in Niseko Town that are switching from septic tanks or single-unit treatment septic tanks to new combined treatment septic tanks in fiscal year 2026.
Application forms are available at Resident Affairs Division or on the town's website. If you are planning to switch to a combined wastewater treatment system between September 2026 and the end of February 2027, please apply. There are conditions regarding the amount of the subsidy and eligibility requirements, such as the size of the wastewater treatment system and the details of the construction work. For more information, please contact us directly or visit the town's website.
Please note that subsidies for septic tanks installed in newly constructed homes ended in 2023.

Consumer affairs consultation memo
Beware of side hustles and investment businesses that lure you in with promises of "easy money."
Many consumer problems related to side jobs and investments are being reported not only to this hotline but also to consumer affairs consultation centers nationwide.
Many consultations regarding side jobs and investments involve being initially asked for large sums of money under the guise of support fees or investment capital. During the solicitation, consumers are told that it's "easy to make money" and "easy to repay," and they believe these claims and pay. However, they are unable to actually make money from the side job or investment, leading to trouble. Some even borrow large sums of money, only to find themselves unable to repay and seeking advice. Furthermore, some businesses, claiming it's necessary for the side job or investment, have consumers install remote access apps or share their screens, and then provide detailed instructions on the loan application process and contents, leaving consumers with no time to think rationally and resulting in them taking out large loans.
Even if businesses soliciting side jobs or investments tell you things like, "You can easily make money," or "You'll quickly recoup your investment," don't take their sweet words at face value.
If you're unsure what to do, or if you find it difficult to solve the problem on your own, please consult a support center or your local government office.

Tanabata evening Fireworks Display
The "Tanabata Evening" fireworks display, a small-scale community-building event, is beloved by the townspeople and will be held for the 46th time this year.
The organizing committee prioritizes the safety and comfort of all visitors, and is focusing on things like setting up the venue and strengthening security.
While we receive sponsorship from businesses and support from the town to run this event, the recent rise in prices has made it increasingly difficult each year. Therefore, we would like to ask for your support for this event again this year through donations. We appreciate your kind support.

Farmers tend to live long lives, but...
I want to live in retirement without worrying about money. However, there are unpredictable economic fluctuations and unexpected injuries or illnesses. The average life expectancy for Japanese people at age 65 is 20 years for men (85 years) and 24 years for women (89 years), and recipients of agricultural pensions live even longer.
Old age life that takes so much
The monthly household expenses for elderly farming households (a couple aged 65 or older) are approximately 264,000 yen (approximately 3.17 million yen annually) in cash expenditures. (Based on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' Household Expenditure Survey, etc.)
The amount of national pension paid is
This amounts to approximately 71,000 yen per person per month (assuming 40 years of contributions), or approximately 142,000 yen per month for a couple. However, the national pension alone is not sufficient for a comfortable retirement, and it is necessary to prepare for retirement living expenses independently. Salaried workers receive an additional amount from the employee pension system on top of the national pension (basic pension) (in the employee pension model case, this amounts to 237,000 yen per month for a couple).
Farmers, too, should consider joining the agricultural pension plan, which offers many benefits, to ensure a secure and prosperous retirement.

Do you all have a "disaster prevention radio"?
The town lends out disaster prevention radios, with one unit provided per household and one per business within the town. These radios have a function that automatically switches on and broadcasts information during emergencies such as disasters.
If you are a household or business that does not yet have one, please apply at the Planning & Environment Division of the town hall to receive a disaster prevention radio. We also lend out multiple units depending on the situation, so please consult with us when you apply.
Furthermore, if your household or business has a disaster prevention radio and experiences problems such as being unable to adjust the volume or switch channels, it may be malfunctioning. We will replace the radio, so please come to the Planning & Environment Division counter at the town hall.

Disaster prevention radio automatic start training
In conjunction with the nationwide simultaneous information transmission test of the Japan Emergency Alert System (J-ALERT), the town will conduct an automatic activation drill for disaster prevention radios. To quickly inform residents of emergency information announced by the national government, the disaster prevention radios will be automatically activated in conjunction with J-ALERT.
When it is time for the drill, a loud voice will be broadcast from the disaster prevention radio. Please be careful not to make a mistake as this is a drill.

The town collects used small household appliances in order to improve recycling and reduce waste.
Small electrical appliances (products powered by household electricity or batteries) contain valuable metals such as iron, aluminum, precious metals, and rare metals, which can be recycled as resources. Therefore, we aim to create a resource cycle by collecting used small electrical appliances and recycling them as metal resources through government-certified businesses. If you have any small electrical appliances that you no longer need at home, please cooperate with our collection program.
We also collect used lithium-ion batteries, such as those found in mobile batteries, so please bring them in.
*Small appliances cannot be collected from people, businesses, offices, or stores outside the town.

The town will be conducting leak investigations in parts of the town from this month through October. During the investigation, staff will enter your property, so we ask for your understanding and cooperation.
how do i investigate?
A leak detector is applied to the water meter buried around the building such as a house. A leak detector detects the faint vibration sound that occurs when water leaks. A survey can be completed in minutes.
The actual survey will be conducted by employees of a company contracted by the town. They will always work in pairs, wear vests provided by the town (Photo 1), and carry identification cards issued by the town (Photo 2). Please note that they will always ask you before conducting the survey, but if you are not present, the survey will proceed as planned. We appreciate your understanding.
Furthermore, if any potential water leaks are discovered on the property, we will immediately explain the situation.

To all landowners
Farmland is a limited and valuable resource for ensuring a stable food supply in a region, and landowners and tenants have a responsibility to use it appropriately and efficiently. While there are no penalties, it is not permissible to leave currently cultivated farmland unused.
Therefore, once a year, Agricultural Committee conducts an on-site inspection of all farmland by local agricultural committee members to survey the current state of farmland use. This may involve entering your farmland or speaking with you, and we ask for your cooperation (this year, it will be from late July to August). If, as a result of this survey, the farmland is found to be neglected and overgrown, Agricultural Committee will send you a survey regarding your intention to use the land.
Agricultural Committee cannot issue a non-agricultural land certificate for farmland that has been included in the survey of land use intentions. Please manage the farmland to prevent it from becoming overgrown, such as by mowing grass and tilling. If you are unable to cultivate the farmland yourself, please contact us and we will help you find someone who can.
Furthermore, if you wish to use farmland for purposes other than agriculture (such as building construction, soil extraction, or material storage), you will need permission from Agricultural Committee (or the Governor of Hokkaido if the area exceeds 4 hectares). There are certain types of farmland that may not be permitted for use, depending on the purpose and location, such as large-scale, high-quality farmland or land where the intended purpose can be achieved through construction other than agriculture. Unauthorized use is subject to penalties. If you have a business plan, please consult with Agricultural Committee as early as possible, as the application and approval process can take time.

Typhoon Preparation
August and September are the months with the highest number of typhoons. These typhoons can approach and make landfall in Hokkaido while maintaining their strength, causing disasters such as heavy rain, landslides, river flooding, strong winds, high waves, and storm surges. When a typhoon is approaching and there is a risk of disaster, the meteorological observatory will issue weather forecast information (Typhoon No. ○) and call for vigilance and caution.
To prepare for typhoons, use hazard maps and other resources created and distributed by your local municipality during normal times to understand the types of disasters likely to occur around your home and to confirm evacuation routes. Also, confirming how to obtain evacuation information issued by your local municipality and disaster prevention weather information released by the meteorological observatory is another important part of your preparation.
The Japan Meteorological Agency website offers a service called "Disaster Prevention Information for Your City," which allows you to check disaster prevention weather information relevant to your city or town on a single page.

Cabbage, cucumbers, radishes, Chinese cabbage, tomatoes, onions, etc. All of these vegetables are designated as "designated vegetables." "Designated vegetables" are vegetables whose consumption is relatively high or is expected to increase, and which belong to categories specified by government ordinance based on their type and normal shipping season (Article 2 of the Vegetable Production and Shipment Stabilization Act). In 1966, there were six designated vegetables as listed above, but the number has increased year by year, and in 2026, broccoli was newly added, bringing the total to 15 items.
The advantage of designated vegetables is that they are eligible for the Vegetable Price Stabilization Program, which provides subsidies to producers when prices fall significantly (Article 10 of the same law). This allows producers to plan their production and stabilize shipments, making the vegetables more accessible to consumers. Broccoli was newly designated as a vegetable because its planted area and shipment volume have increased significantly compared to 10 years ago. In particular, in Hokkaido, the planted area has increased by about 1.3 times and the shipment volume by about 1.2 times. In the future, it is likely to become an even more familiar vegetable in daily life. By the way, my favorite is deep-fried broccoli as a topping for soup curry.

Subsidies for the installation and maintenance of septic tanks (additional applications accepted)
We are accepting additional applications for subsidies for installation costs for private residences in Niseko Town that are switching from septic tanks or single-unit treatment septic tanks to new combined treatment septic tanks in fiscal year 2026.
Application forms are available at Resident Affairs Division or on the town's website. If you are planning to switch to a combined wastewater treatment system between September 2026 and the end of February 2027, please apply. There are conditions regarding the amount of the subsidy and eligibility requirements, such as the size of the wastewater treatment system and the details of the construction work. For more information, please contact us directly or visit the town's website.
Please note that subsidies for septic tanks installed in newly constructed homes ended in 2023.

Consumer affairs consultation memo
Beware of side hustles and investment businesses that lure you in with promises of "easy money."
Many consumer problems related to side jobs and investments are being reported not only to this hotline but also to consumer affairs consultation centers nationwide.
Many consultations regarding side jobs and investments involve being initially asked for large sums of money under the guise of support fees or investment capital. During the solicitation, consumers are told that it's "easy to make money" and "easy to repay," and they believe these claims and pay. However, they are unable to actually make money from the side job or investment, leading to trouble. Some even borrow large sums of money, only to find themselves unable to repay and seeking advice. Furthermore, some businesses, claiming it's necessary for the side job or investment, have consumers install remote access apps or share their screens, and then provide detailed instructions on the loan application process and contents, leaving consumers with no time to think rationally and resulting in them taking out large loans.
Even if businesses soliciting side jobs or investments tell you things like, "You can easily make money," or "You'll quickly recoup your investment," don't take their sweet words at face value.
If you're unsure what to do, or if you find it difficult to solve the problem on your own, please consult a support center or your local government office.

The "Tanabata Evening" fireworks display, a small-scale community-building event, is beloved by the townspeople and will be held for the 46th time this year.
The organizing committee prioritizes the safety and comfort of all visitors, and is focusing on things like setting up the venue and strengthening security.

Farmers tend to live long lives, but...
I want to live in retirement without worrying about money. However, there are unpredictable economic fluctuations and unexpected injuries or illnesses. The average life expectancy for Japanese people at age 65 is 20 years for men (85 years) and 24 years for women (89 years), and recipients of agricultural pensions live even longer.
Old age life that takes so much
The monthly household expenses for elderly farming households (a couple aged 65 or older) are approximately 264,000 yen (approximately 3.17 million yen annually) in cash expenditures. (Based on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' Household Expenditure Survey, etc.)
The amount of national pension paid is
This amounts to approximately 71,000 yen per person per month (assuming 40 years of contributions), or approximately 142,000 yen per month for a couple. However, the national pension alone is not sufficient for a comfortable retirement, and it is necessary to prepare for retirement living expenses independently. Salaried workers receive an additional amount from the employee pension system on top of the national pension (basic pension) (in the employee pension model case, this amounts to 237,000 yen per month for a couple).
Farmers, too, should consider joining the agricultural pension plan, which offers many benefits, to ensure a secure and prosperous retirement.

Do you all have a "disaster prevention radio"?
The town lends out disaster prevention radios, with one unit provided per household and one per business within the town. These radios have a function that automatically switches on and broadcasts information during emergencies such as disasters.
If you are a household or business that does not yet have one, please apply at the Planning & Environment Division of the town hall to receive a disaster prevention radio. We also lend out multiple units depending on the situation, so please consult with us when you apply.
Furthermore, if your household or business has a disaster prevention radio and experiences problems such as being unable to adjust the volume or switch channels, it may be malfunctioning. We will replace the radio, so please come to the Planning & Environment Division counter at the town hall.

The results of the national census have been released. While the population is declining nationwide, Niseko Town is one of the few municipalities experiencing population growth. This is good news, but it has also created new challenges, such as housing shortages and labor shortages.
On the other hand, population figures alone do not represent the entirety of a town. Niseko Town where residents are self-governing, we want to engage in dialogue with people from various backgrounds and incorporate diverse voices and wisdom into town development. Population changes are one indicator, but it is also important that the number of people who want to be involved with this town and who love it increases.
We will consider the future of Niseko Town, cherishing the lives and connections that lie beyond the numbers.
Editor's Note
In the blink of an eye, the third issue of the Niseko Koho Niseko Newsletter for this fiscal year is complete. Each time we finish a issue, I'm reminded of how quickly time flies, thinking, "Is it June already?" or "Is it July already?", and I feel a mix of satisfaction and a little bit of anxiety.
In last month's June issue, I was in charge of a feature article about Radio Niseko. Thanks to the cooperation of the staff and listeners, we were able to deliver it successfully. Actually, although I've only been living in Niseko Town for two years, I hadn't listened to Radio Niseko much before, but through the interviews, I was drawn to the charm of Radio Niseko. Now that the feature is finished, I'm a big fan.
Not just in our special features, but every time I hear stories from people active in the town, I discover new charms of Niseko Town. I want to share those charms with all of you. If there are any people, things, or events you'd like us to feature, please let us know!

On the other hand, population figures alone do not represent the entirety of a town. Niseko Town where residents are self-governing, we want to engage in dialogue with people from various backgrounds and incorporate diverse voices and wisdom into town development. Population changes are one indicator, but it is also important that the number of people who want to be involved with this town and who love it increases.
We will consider the future of Niseko Town, cherishing the lives and connections that lie beyond the numbers.
Editor's Note
In the blink of an eye, the third issue of the Niseko Koho Niseko Newsletter for this fiscal year is complete. Each time we finish a issue, I'm reminded of how quickly time flies, thinking, "Is it June already?" or "Is it July already?", and I feel a mix of satisfaction and a little bit of anxiety.
In last month's June issue, I was in charge of a feature article about Radio Niseko. Thanks to the cooperation of the staff and listeners, we were able to deliver it successfully. Actually, although I've only been living in Niseko Town for two years, I hadn't listened to Radio Niseko much before, but through the interviews, I was drawn to the charm of Radio Niseko. Now that the feature is finished, I'm a big fan.
Not just in our special features, but every time I hear stories from people active in the town, I discover new charms of Niseko Town. I want to share those charms with all of you. If there are any people, things, or events you'd like us to feature, please let us know!
And starting with the June issue, we've included a four-panel comic strip. Have you read it yet? We'll continue to challenge ourselves with new things, aiming to create a newsletter that everyone will want to read. (T)
