[Special Feature] Radio is not just for listening, it's for appearing! Radio Niseko celebrates its 15th anniversary.
A community FM radio station was established in Niseko Town on March 31, 2012. Radio Niseko has been supported by many residents and has continued to grow as "a radio station that you can not only listen to, but also appear on," and in March 2026 it entered its 15th year.
This month's issue will introduce you to Radio Niseko.

The photos of the show's cast members are now plastered all over the walls, 15 years later, and have become an iconic part of the "Radio Niseko landscape."
Until Radio Niseko opens
"Information sharing" is one of the fundamentals of community development in Niseko Town. The town used to disseminate information via off-talk communication using telephone lines, but this was discontinued in 2008 due to the aging of the equipment.
After considering various tools, we decided on a community FM station that could not only provide information from the town hall but also support local community activities. We established a Community FM Promotion Section within the town hall, and after a review meeting composed of town residents and businesses, Radio Niseko began broadcasting on March 31, 2012, featuring the voices of local children.
The catchphrase "Not just for listening, but for appearing on radio!" was born during discussions at the planning meeting. This phrase remains a symbol of Radio Niseko to this day.
The service operates under a "public-private partnership" model, with the town providing the facilities and equipment, and the Niseko Resort Tourism Association handling broadcast operations. Based on its function as a disaster prevention radio, it is distributed free of charge to town households and businesses.

What kind of radio station is Radio Niseko?
● A radio program that reports on what's happening in Niseko right now.
Radio Niseko delivers essential information to people living in the Niseko area through daily programs such as "Niseko Morning" and "Kira Niseko."
Weather forecasts, traffic information, event information, lifestyle information, government information, Niseko avalanche information. We broadcast essential information for daily life and report on what is happening in Niseko Town. What is especially important is our role during disasters. During the Iburi Eastern Earthquake in September 2018, Radio Niseko staff lost sleep.
The broadcast continued without interruption. Focusing on information about essential services such as power outages and water shortages, the radio station continued to broadcast messages of support to the townspeople, such as "Please stay calm" and "Be careful as it is still dark." The voices of Radio Niseko, broadcast from disaster prevention radios distributed to residents and businesses, became a "reliable presence" for many people. To ensure the safety of everyone in the community, a system is in place to prepare for emergencies such as earthquakes and weather-related disasters.
Furthermore, we are making efforts to reach people outside the region with information about the Niseko area by disseminating information through multiple methods, such as smartphone apps and YouTube.
● Radio that deepens the bonds of Niseko
"Not just for listening, but for appearing on radio!" This catchphrase perfectly encapsulates Radio Niseko's defining characteristic.
Over the past 14 years, an average of about 300 people have appeared as guests on programs such as "Niseko Morning," "Kira Niseko," and "Open Studio" each year. You probably know someone who has appeared on Radio Niseko.
Radio Niseko connects people who didn't know each other before, creating new communities. Furthermore, the town's resident personalities program features a rotating weekly lineup of residents from Niseko Town and surrounding towns and villages, ranging from children to the elderly.
Through Radio Niseko, people from diverse backgrounds who gather in the Niseko area are meeting, interacting, and creating new communities.
● Radio that makes life in Niseko more enjoyable
To support a fulfilling life in Niseko, we provide information and music to make everyday life more enjoyable. Since May 2026, we have been connecting by phone with the Niseko View Plaza direct sales market during our morning program to provide up-to-date information on seasonal vegetables and wild plants, recommended ways to eat them, and how to grow vegetable seedlings (Weekly Vegetable Information). We also broadcast time signals featuring the voices of various people involved with Niseko. In addition to children's voices and time signals in English, we also broadcast time signals from Niseko Town residents and other "Niseko fans."
Furthermore, they are engaged in various activities to enrich the lives of Niseko residents, such as broadcasting support programs for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters Niseko Supporters Association and accepting junior and senior high school students for work experience.

Niseko Morning
I grew up listening to the radio more than watching television. In junior high school, I became a huge fan of the radio-themed anime "Listen to the Waves" and the voice actress for the main character, Riho Sugiyama, and dreamed of becoming a radio personality. I then studied radio program production at a voice acting school, and this spring I joined Radio Niseko, fulfilling that dream. I had been interning at Radio Niseko since last fall, but from March 30th I became a regular host of the morning live broadcast program, handling almost all of the preparations myself, from gathering information and organizing scripts to operating the equipment.
I'm completely absorbed in my work every day, but I've gradually started doing something I'm interested in: "sharing my favorite anime, music, and tokusatsu on the radio," and I'm finding it very fulfilling. In the future, I will continue my research with the goal of becoming someone people say, "When it comes to anime, it's Rei-chan!"
I'm still very inexperienced, but I would appreciate your kind understanding and support. Thank you!

I worked in sales for a company in Sapporo for a long time, but before I knew it, my mind and body had reached their limits. So, in order to work in a way that suited me, I applied to become a regional revitalization cooperation team member in Niseko Town.
I didn't even know about the existence of the Regional Revitalization Cooperation Team system, but since my grandmother lives in Niseko Town, I've been visiting Niseko Town since the days when the Niseko buses were blue and white. As an adult, I started visiting Niseko Town for snowboarding and SUP, and I was drawn to the rich nature of Niseko Town which led me to decide to move there. A year has passed since I became Niseko Town, and I've made strong connections with many people, including a culture of sharing that I never experienced in Sapporo, and I feel the warmth of the people every day.
I've always found fulfillment in making others happy by communicating and expressing myself. Going forward, as a radio personality, I will continue to deliver information that will bring joy to everyone, as if I were speaking to you in person.

I'm originally from Tanegashima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. I've lived in Hokkaido for 50 years since coming here for university. I've had a variety of jobs, including being the director of a certified children's center, the owner and chef of an oyster bar, and a certified psychologist and counselor. I also used to host a regular morning radio program on a community FM station in Sapporo.
Radio is a medium that makes you feel like you're having a conversation with someone, and I like that sense of familiarity.
I used to visit Niseko Town often when I was working as a mountain guide, and I remember it as a beautiful town. Currently, I live a three-location lifestyle, spending half the week in Niseko Town, working as a counselor in Sapporo, and having my home in Ebetsu.
On the radio, I hope to share information that I hope will be helpful, based on my various experiences and the changes in Hokkaido over the past 50 years. Beyond simply broadcasting information, I also want to hear the voices of listeners and people both inside and outside the town. I want to help connect people by conveying information, listening attentively, and listening to their stories.

This is the only live talk variety show broadcast at night on Radio Niseko. Started in 2020, this program is hosted by Nakabachi-san, Radio Niseko's longest-serving host, and features a different energy than other programs. It's full of stories you can only hear on "Possible," including Nakabachi-san's personal anecdotes and his "Shohei Ohtani savings." We have a different email theme each time, so please participate! The program also accepts songwriting submissions from listeners.
We also created an original song! It was composed by Mr. Nakabachi! This original song, along with the entire program, is archived and available on Radio Niseko's official YouTube channel, so you can watch it anytime, anywhere.

I've always loved radio. When I was in university, I belonged to a seminar taught by Hiroki Sugisawa, the current president of Sapporo's Sankakuyama Broadcasting Station, who was deeply involved in the establishment of Radio Niseko. As part of the seminar's fieldwork, I had the opportunity to appear on Radio Niseko. A photo from that time is still displayed on the wall of the station building, with the words "I will definitely come back" written on it. Later, through a fortunate connection, I became an employee of Radio Niseko and came to live in Niseko Town.
My first year at the company was the year of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, and I experienced firsthand the difficulties of broadcasting disaster information live. I remember receiving a lot of emails at the time. Many of them were song requests, such as children's songs or popular songs of the time, and I realized that listeners of the radio, during a disaster, want not only information but also time to listen to music, with their requested songs being played.
What Radio Niseko has always valued is that "broadcasting is merely a means to an end; the goal is community building." For example, there was a time when someone mentioned on the radio that they wanted to open a flower shop, and someone who listened to the broadcast introduced a location for the shop, leading to its opening. This was a perfect example of people connecting through broadcasting. We hope that more and more such things will happen in the future.
Radio Niseko can also be listened to using a free smartphone app, so even those who have left town can stay connected with their hometown in real time. I want to embody the idea of "radio that's not just for listening, but for being a part of," not only by appearing on the show, but also by sending messages and requests in various other ways.
● Struggling to fulfill the role of disaster prevention radio and to foster trust and development

New Broadcasting Station Director
I worked as a disaster prevention specialist at the town hall until March, and moved to Radio Niseko in April. Before that, I worked for 39 years at a broadcasting station in Sapporo, mainly as a broadcast journalist, handling news reporting and documentary production.
My connection to Niseko Town dates back to 1981, when I moved from Ishikawa Prefecture to Sapporo City to attend university. At the time, there was a ski boom, and skiing on Annupuri was something I longed for. I traveled there by train with friends and skied until sunset. Later, I got a job at a broadcasting station in Sapporo City and covered Niseko Town election held in 1994, reporting on the new mayor, who became the youngest municipal head in the country, on television and radio. Since then, I have become one of the people connected to Niseko Town both professionally and personally, and finally, I moved there last March, where I live today.
My connection to radio dates back to the 1970s, when I experienced the late-night radio boom and the BCL (shortwave listener) boom firsthand. I listen to the news on my earphones during my commute, and even now I listen to "Radio Midnight Express" before going to sleep; I'm a true radio enthusiast. During my time at the broadcasting station, I also produced many radio documentary programs.
Radio Niseko possesses a unique characteristic and great potential in its identity as "a broadcast by Niseko Town, for Niseko Town, and of Niseko Town." We are also constantly striving to fulfill our role as a disaster prevention radio system and to further develop the trust that our predecessors have built.
Best Niseko
We wanted to share the best and most authentic things about Niseko Town with the townspeople and Niseko fans. With that in mind, Radio Niseko collaborated with the town to launch its own media platform called "Saiko Niseko" (The Best Niseko).
Saiko Niseko shares moments that make everyone involved with Niseko Town want to shout "Saiko!" (meaning "Awesome!"), and provides information that will make you love Niseko Town even more.

The final budget for the general account was 11,281,410,000 yen, an increase of 3,019,330,000 yen compared to the previous year.
Major large-scale public works projects include the redevelopment of the fire station, the development of the Niseko High School dormitory, the development of a new housing complex, the development of solar power generation equipment for public facilities, the development of water sources in urban areas, the project to bear the costs of the second phase of development of Kutchan Kosei Hospital, and the development and improvement of town roads (including the development of Niseko Mirai Street).
In fiscal year 2026, we will systematically implement projects such as the redevelopment of the fire station (exterior construction), renovation of the Niseko High School dormitory, development of a new housing complex, improvement of the Niseko Mirai Street town road (underground conduit construction for power lines), development of solar power generation equipment for public facilities, renovation of the general gymnasium, and renovation of park facilities. We will also promote the extension of the lifespan and systematic renewal of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and water and sewage systems.
In addition, projects carried over from fiscal year 2025 will include the provision of childcare support allowances to cope with rising prices, SDGs, forestry, tourism, commerce and industry, education promotion projects, and road maintenance projects. The total amount of the carried-over budget is 178.14 million yen, and these projects will be implemented by securing revenue through the use of national and prefectural subsidies and the issuance of town bonds.
Going forward, we will continue to thoroughly review our projects, efficiently execute our expenditure budget, and implement necessary measures to maintain and develop the town, while prioritizing projects from a medium- to long-term perspective and implementing planned and balanced financial management in order to reduce future burdens.

Calling for fire prevention
Spring Fire Prevention Parade
The Niseko branch of the Yotei Mountain Foot Fire Department held a fire prevention parade in conjunction with the "All-Hokkaido Spring Fire Prevention Campaign," which began on April 20th. Fire trucks and tanker trucks toured the entire town, calling for fire prevention. In addition, members of Niseko Town Women's Fire Prevention Club distributed fire prevention awareness materials, conveying the importance of fire prevention to many people.
During this season, the air is dry and windy, making it easy for fires to start, so please be extra careful when handling fire.

Welcome ceremonies for first-graders were held at Niseko Elementary School and Kondo Elementary School. At both schools, in addition to introducing the school song, each grade level introduced school events and rules of school life through quizzes and skits. At Kondo Elementary School, fifth and sixth graders also filled cake-shaped boxes with many presents and handed them out to each first-grader.
The first-graders are gradually getting used to school life, and they looked much more relaxed and smiling than they did at the entrance ceremony. We're looking forward to seeing what school life holds for them!

Enjoying Indonesian street food snacks
Cooking class hosted by Niseko FRIENDS
The Niseko FRIENDS secretariat held a cooking class at the town community center.
The theme for the day was "Indonesian street food snacks." The participants enjoyed chimol (fried tapioca) and pis chok (chocolate-covered banana).
While making two kinds of freshly fried, decadent spring rolls, participants learned about Indonesian street food culture. They also seemed to enjoy interacting with each other while savoring the delicious snacks they had made.

Shiribeshi Black & White Show
The 49th Shiribeshi Black & White Show was held at Livestock Fairgrounds in the town.
Each dairy farmer presented one dairy cow, lovingly and carefully raised by the farmers, and the cows were judged by month and age, as well as by farm and by town/village. Four dairy cows were presented from Niseko Town.
Visitors to the venue enjoyed themselves by participating in a contest where they voted on how the judges evaluated the works.

Towards the complete recovery of the Sakhalin taimen population
Harvesting eggs of the huchen
At Arishima Pond, near Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum the "Obirame Association for Considering the Future of the Shiribetsu River" carried out egg collection and measurement work on the Ito trout (Obirame in Ainu), which is in its spawning season.
The Obirame Association has formulated the "Obirame 30-Year Plan" as a long-term goal, and has been working since 2001 with the aim of creating "the Shiribetsu River where Sakhalin taimen can always be caught and live" by 2030. In addition to this activity, they also conduct outreach classes at schools in the river basin to raise awareness about the issue of Sakhalin taimen.

Forest learning
Mushroom inoculation experience
In Motomachi, with the cooperation of forestry expert Tsunoda, the Forestry Division of the Shiribeshi General Promotion Bureau, and Chitose Forestry Co., Ltd., fourth-grade students from Niseko Elementary School participated in a mushroom inoculation experience. While struggling with the heavy drills, the students carefully drilled holes in logs and injected shiitake mushroom spawn.
Finally, they participated in a harvesting experience, searching for shiitake mushrooms growing on logs like a treasure hunt. Through this experience, they deepened their understanding of the town's natural environment.

Walking-friendly body training x Brain training health class
The town and Niseko Town Social Welfare Council held a health class that combined brain training with exercises to improve walking ability, with Junki Yokono, a former Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo player, and Yuka Kanazawa from Machi no Mirai Co., Ltd. as instructors.
Participants actively engaged in activities such as walking and physical exercise, and comments like "I worked up a good sweat!" could be heard. The venue was filled with smiles and laughter throughout the fun brain-training games.

Cooking class hosted by Niseko FRIENDS
The Niseko FRIENDS secretariat held a cooking class at the town community center.
The theme for the day was "Indonesian street food snacks." The participants enjoyed chimol (fried tapioca) and pis chok (chocolate-covered banana).
While making two kinds of freshly fried, decadent spring rolls, participants learned about Indonesian street food culture. They also seemed to enjoy interacting with each other while savoring the delicious snacks they had made.

The competition is based on the beauty of the dairy cows.
Shiribeshi Black & White Show
The 49th Shiribeshi Black & White Show was held at Livestock Fairgrounds in the town.
Each dairy farmer presented one dairy cow, lovingly and carefully raised by the farmers, and the cows were judged by month and age, as well as by farm and by town/village. Four dairy cows were presented from Niseko Town.
Visitors to the venue enjoyed themselves by participating in a contest where they voted on how the judges evaluated the works.

Towards the complete recovery of the Sakhalin taimen population
Harvesting eggs of the huchen
At Arishima Pond, near Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum the "Obirame Association for Considering the Future of the Shiribetsu River" carried out egg collection and measurement work on the Ito trout (Obirame in Ainu), which is in its spawning season.
The Obirame Association has formulated the "Obirame 30-Year Plan" as a long-term goal, and has been working since 2001 with the aim of creating "the Shiribetsu River where Sakhalin taimen can always be caught and live" by 2030. In addition to this activity, they also conduct outreach classes at schools in the river basin to raise awareness about the issue of Sakhalin taimen.

Forest learning
Mushroom inoculation experience
In Motomachi, with the cooperation of forestry expert Tsunoda, the Forestry Division of the Shiribeshi General Promotion Bureau, and Chitose Forestry Co., Ltd., fourth-grade students from Niseko Elementary School participated in a mushroom inoculation experience. While struggling with the heavy drills, the students carefully drilled holes in logs and injected shiitake mushroom spawn.
Finally, they participated in a harvesting experience, searching for shiitake mushrooms growing on logs like a treasure hunt. Through this experience, they deepened their understanding of the town's natural environment.

Walking-friendly body training x Brain training health class
The town and Niseko Town Social Welfare Council held a health class that combined brain training with exercises to improve walking ability, with Junki Yokono, a former Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo player, and Yuka Kanazawa from Machi no Mirai Co., Ltd. as instructors.
Participants actively engaged in activities such as walking and physical exercise, and comments like "I worked up a good sweat!" could be heard. The venue was filled with smiles and laughter throughout the fun brain-training games.

2 bell peppers

<How to make>

As temperatures rise towards summer, heatstroke is a particular concern. In recent years, the average summer temperature (June to August) in Hokkaido has been steadily increasing. Last summer, in particular, saw record-breaking high temperatures, and the number of people transported to hospitals due to heatstroke reached 2,727, the second highest number on record.
This summer's forecast (warm season forecast) predicts high average temperatures. Every year, the number of emergency transports due to heatstroke increases sharply from July onwards, so it is important to prepare for heatstroke even before the peak of summer arrives. For example, get used to the heat by doing light exercise such as walking or doing household chores, within reasonable limits.
Also, it's important to prepare in advance to keep the room cool, and to replenish fluids and electrolytes frequently on hot days. Let's take measures to prevent heatstroke, such as checking on each other.

I went for a walk in Tokeien Garden.
With warmer days becoming more frequent, the season has arrived when the fresh green leaves seem dazzling.
The other day, I went to Higashi Keien with a parent and child who were visiting Ohisama, and we took a stroll around. It was a sunny day, and the pink of the cherry blossoms, the blue of the sky, and the green of the new leaves were so vibrant and beautiful. As we walked around, we saw squirrels and snakes. We also had fun playing ball in the open field.
It's a pleasant season for enjoying a stroll. A leisurely walk would be nice.

With the weather warming up and various flowers in bloom, it's become a delightful season for walks.
The other day, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, so we went for a walk to see them. The children were delighted to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom, saying, "They're so beautiful!"
As we walked, we saw flowers like tulips and daffodils in bloom, and we enjoyed the feeling of spring. After walking for a long time, some of the children were saying things like, "I'm hungry."

“People of the Green Rain” by Arata Iyohara, Shinchosha
This is a full-length novel depicting the life of Katsuko Saruhashi, a pioneer of women's science in Japan. She questioned the principles of rain, asking "Why does it rain?", and dedicated her life to research, never losing her passion for science. Ukichiro Nakaya, who conducted aircraft icing experiments on the summit of Mount Annupuri, also appears in the story. While it contains some difficult scientific terminology, please read about her life and how she maintained her convictions despite feeling lonely during a time when it was difficult for women to receive an education. Niseko Town Go Club
Niseko Town Go Club, as an organization within Niseko Town Cultural Association, has been active for over 70 years with the aim of improving the skills and fostering camaraderie among Go enthusiasts, and contributing to the spread of Go culture.
The activities are as follows:
1. Matches will be held every Saturday from 1 PM in the Japanese-style room on the second floor of the town community center.
2. A Go tournament will be held at the cultural festival (anyone interested in Go can participate).
3. Increase membership (no membership fees, participation is voluntary).
Our club welcomes anyone interested in learning Go, watching games, receiving instruction, or simply enjoying a match. We have plenty of Go boards and stones, so parent-child matches are also welcome. It may help stimulate the brain in seniors and help children develop their talents. Textbook display
We will be displaying textbooks for all subjects currently used in elementary and junior high schools throughout Niseko Town. The narrative texts in the Japanese language textbooks are filled with beautiful Japanese language and pleasant sounds. We recommend reading them aloud, as you will appreciate their beauty even more.

“People of the Green Rain” by Arata Iyohara, Shinchosha
This is a full-length novel depicting the life of Katsuko Saruhashi, a pioneer of women's science in Japan. She questioned the principles of rain, asking "Why does it rain?", and dedicated her life to research, never losing her passion for science. Ukichiro Nakaya, who conducted aircraft icing experiments on the summit of Mount Annupuri, also appears in the story. Niseko Town Go Club
Niseko Town Go Club, as an organization within Niseko Town Cultural Association, has been active for over 70 years with the aim of improving the skills and fostering camaraderie among Go enthusiasts, and contributing to the spread of Go culture.
The activities are as follows:
1. Matches will be held every Saturday from 1 PM in the Japanese-style room on the second floor of the town community center.
2. A Go tournament will be held at the cultural festival (anyone interested in Go can participate).
3. Increase membership (no membership fees, participation is voluntary).
Our club welcomes anyone interested in learning Go, watching games, receiving instruction, or simply enjoying a match. We have plenty of Go boards and stones, so parent-child matches are also welcome. It may help stimulate the brain in seniors and help children develop their talents. We hope you'll discover the fun of Go!

Niseko Mirai has planned a variety of events so far, including playing in the snow, planting seeds in a shared field, harvest festivals, play experiences for children, and thinning experiences in the woods.
Niseko Town 's "SDGs Future City Plan" aims to revitalize the local economy and create regional appeal. Therefore, Niseko Mirai has set the goal of "creating a place to support and promote the future of Niseko," and is working with local creators, farmers, and delicious food.
We're looking for people who can create things, people who want to start something new, and people who want to take on challenges to set up shops, and we'll be holding "Niseko Mirai Marche," an event where people who want to support these challengers can gather!

Welcome to the newly renovated former starch factory!
Hello everyone! This is the former starch factory in the Central Warehouse Complex. Our facility has started operating under a new system since April. Sumie Tobe has been appointed as the new director, and two new members of the Regional Revitalization Cooperation Team have been assigned here. After facility maintenance, the layout of the indoor exchange space has also been significantly changed. New counter seats have been added to the working space to make it easier to concentrate. At the end of April, the cafe "Veggie Rira" also opened, providing a place where you can relax and enjoy a meal.
[Event Announcement] On Saturday, June 13th, from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Ishikari's "Hoho no Mori" will be hosting a mini-event! There will be exciting stalls selling sweets and pressed sushi, color therapy, a nail salon, and more.

After the appointment ceremony, a new beginning.
An appointment ceremony was held at Niseko Town Hall on April 1st. In the morning, two newly appointed team members received their appointments, and in the afternoon, nine returning team members received theirs, each taking their first steps into a new chapter.
After receiving our letters of appointment, Mayor Tanaka encouraged us to use our abilities to contribute to the town's development, which made us feel a great sense of responsibility. This year, we will start with a total of 15 people, which is fewer than last year, but under the leadership of our new team leader, we will work together as a team, utilizing each of our strengths and skills. Continuing members will use their experience while also approaching things with renewed enthusiasm, while new members will begin by getting used to the lifestyle and work.
We will continue to engage with the local community through event support and other activities. We would be grateful if you would take even a small interest in our work. (Daigo Kizawa)

I am very happy to be able to return to the town where I was born and raised. I lived in Niseko Town until I was in high school, and then I went to Sapporo for college. Even when I was living in Sapporo, I often went back to Niseko Town to ski and play golf. I went to Sapporo with the desire to create a restaurant in Niseko Town where the townspeople could gather. Now, as a member of the volunteer corps, I will do my best to interact with everyone, get to know Niseko Town as it is today, and create a place of relaxation for everyone.
I'm currently assigned to the Niseko Central Warehouse Complex. We welcome visitors for a variety of purposes, including café use, events, remote work, and tea parties with children. Please feel free to say hello when you visit!
I enjoy sports, so we might run into each other in various places around town. I look forward to getting to know you.

This year, I will be working as the housemaster of the dormitory at Niseko International High School, which has just opened. Currently, there are more than 60 students living in the dormitory, ranging from first to third year students, from both within and outside Hokkaido. I am working hard every day to ensure that they can live in safety and have a fulfilling high school life.
Previously, I worked in areas related to English language instruction, career guidance, and adaptation support for junior and senior high school students, as well as the acceptance and dispatch of international students. I also volunteered as a host family for over 30 international students. Now that my three sons have become independent and my husband has retired, I decided I wanted to try something new, so I moved to Niseko Town by myself. If you see my blue car with an Ise-Shima license plate, please feel free to say hello.

I moved here from Nagoya, a city with so many delicious things to eat. I used to think Nagoya had great food, but after trying Hokkaido's vegetables and seafood, I realized that nothing compares to Hokkaido. I'm so glad I moved to Hokkaido, where I can enjoy such delicious food.
I used to be an elementary school teacher in Nagoya. I moved to Niseko Town with a rich international atmosphere, because I wanted to create an environment where children could become fluent in English. I want to use the rest of my life meaningfully and contribute to the future of children.
Although I haven't lived here for very long, I feel fortunate to be able to live here every morning with a view of the majestic Mount Yotei. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Regarding the revision of Kirano-yu usage fees, scheduled for July 1, 2026.
Niseko Station Front Hot Spring "Kirano-yu" has been operating as a local public bathhouse since its opening in 2001, providing a place for hot springs and relaxation for townspeople and tourists alike. We would like to inform you that we are planning to revise our usage fees as follows.
Review of usage fees
Due to factors such as price revisions at nearby hot spring facilities and an increase in tourists, the number of visitors to Kiranoyu has increased. In addition, taking into account the impact of rising material costs due to inflation, we will revise the usage fees for non-Niseko Town as shown in the table on the left, in order to ensure the stable and sustainable management of the facility in the future.
Niseko Town need to complete the necessary procedures.
For Niseko Town, the usage fee (admission fee) will remain unchanged, but they will need to go through the procedure to obtain a card to prove they are Niseko Town.

Important Notice
Management status of general waste final disposal sites
Last year, no crushed non-combustible materials were transported to the final disposal site.
Currently, the landfill site has filled approximately 90% of its landfill capacity in the 25 years since it began operation. All of the waste is now disposed of in Kutchan Town.
The water used at the disposal site is cleaned and then released into the river.
At the final disposal site, water is sprayed to prevent the scattering of waste and to reduce its harmfulness. The sprayed water is collected at a water treatment facility on the premises, purified, and then discharged into the river. (Table 1)
The future of final disposal sites
When the final disposal site was first constructed, it was expected to be full by the end of fiscal year 2009. However, due to the trends in landfill volume to date and the cessation of incineration ash delivery due to the conversion of combustible waste into solid fuel, the period of use has been extended (Table 2). As of fiscal year 2018, final disposal has been carried out at a private facility.
Going forward, we plan to consider how to make effective use of the current final disposal site facilities and grounds. We ask for your continued cooperation in reducing non-burnable waste and bulky waste, and in separating recyclable waste, in order to protect the local environment.

One thing that is missing in June and December is national holidays. Article 1 of the Act on National Holidays states, "The Japanese people, who constantly strive for freedom and peace, hereby establish days for the entire nation to celebrate, give thanks for, or commemorate, in order to cultivate beautiful customs and build a better society and a richer life, and these days shall be called 'National Holidays'."
Currently, this law designates 16 national holidays per year. Some of these holidays have fixed dates, such as Children's Day on May 5th, while others, like Marine Day on the third Monday of July, are designated by month and day of the week to ensure a long weekend each year. Incidentally, Marine Day was established in 1996 through a legal amendment in 1995, and has been observed on the third Monday of July since 2003. Furthermore, Article 2 of the same law stipulates the name and purpose of each national holiday. For example, the purpose of Marine Day is to express gratitude for the blessings of the sea and to pray for the prosperity of Japan, a maritime nation, while the purpose of Mountain Day on August 11th is to provide an opportunity to appreciate mountains and express gratitude for their blessings.
National holidays are not just days off; understanding their meaning and origins can also be an opportunity to deepen our understanding of society and history.

In conjunction with the nationwide simultaneous information transmission test of the National Instant Warning System (J-ALERT), the town will conduct an automatic activation drill for disaster prevention radios. Riko Sasaki's Claire Paris Correspondence

I'm often asked, "What kind of work does Claire do?" and one easy way to explain it is through the "JET Program." We dispatch CIRs (Coordinators for International Relations), ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers), and SEAs (Sports Exchange Officers), who are well-known in Niseko Town, to various local governments.
From March to April, together with the Embassy of Japan in France, the Japanese language test and selection process for participants of the 2026 JET Program
I was involved in the selection process. Although there are many applicants in France, the number of positions available is still small, and only about 6 people are hired nationwide each year.
There are no other options. Furthermore, even among those options, there are not many local governments that offer positions where you can actually use French. For this reason, the JET Program in France requires not only Japanese and French language skills, but also a high level of English proficiency. All of the applicants this time were highly proficient in both Japanese and English. During the selection process, I spent a lot of time discussing with the embassy, my superiors, and my colleagues, but there were times when I wondered if I was worthy of selecting such excellent individuals.
French is widely spoken in Africa and Canada, and with approximately 396 million Francophones (French speakers), it is the fourth most spoken language in the world. Currently, Anna, a CIR from Belgium, is playing a very active role in Niseko Town, and we hope that through the JET Program, French will become an even more familiar language for everyone in the future!

Niseko Town National Farmland Restructuring Project Promotion Reformation Letter

Niseko Town National Farmland Reorganization and Development Project Promotion Association General Meeting and District Promotion Committee meeting for fiscal year 2026 were held!
The general meeting of the organizing committee for fiscal year 2026 was held at the town community center on April 9th. Twenty-nine people attended, including guests of honor, representatives and deputy representatives from each district, and representatives from the Otaru Development and Construction Department's Shiribeshi Central Agricultural Development Office. The meeting discussed and approved the reports submitted by the secretariat and the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026. The Otaru Development and Construction Department, which oversees the project, introduced its staff and explained the details of this year's project, followed by an exchange of opinions with the attendees.
Furthermore, district promotion committee meetings were held in all eight districts (four venues) from April 20th to 23rd, with 41 farmers participating in the project in attendance. At the committee meetings, the secretariat explained matters such as reports and project cost burdens, and the Otaru Development and Construction Department explained the fields scheduled for construction this fiscal year, followed by a question and answer session.
Now in its 12th year since construction began, the project is steadily progressing towards completion. We, as the organizing committee, will continue to work even harder to ensure the project's successful completion.

Niseko Town Kento Tanaka
When I meet people in the community, they sometimes ask me things like, "Are you getting enough sleep?" or "Being mayor must be tough." It's true that there's no end to the things I think about and worry about, but strangely enough, I feel fulfilled every day. Being able to hear directly from the townspeople at community events and in casual conversations is a great source of satisfaction in this job. Lately, more and more children have been waving to me or calling out, "Mayor!" It's just a brief exchange, but each time it gives me the strength to keep going.
As a community where residents are self-governing, I believe it's important to address the feedback we receive without ambiguity and to clearly communicate the town's perspective. We will continue to engage in dialogue and carefully make decisions one by one.
Editor's Note
Although it's gradually getting warmer, the fluctuating temperatures and unpredictable weather make it difficult to decide what to wear. On windy days, something flying around makes my eyes itchy and my nose tingly. I've experienced countless springs already, but I'm still constantly at the mercy of the weather, and before I knew it, I've reached my third year in the Public Relations and Public Opinion Section. Even after three years, I still get nervous when I go out to do interviews... I can't help but wonder when I'll finally get used to it.
For the past two years, we've been working with a group of wonderful colleagues, experimenting and refining our newsletter to make it more accessible and easier for everyone to use in their daily lives. We've come up with various ideas, such as categorizing the content and using a horizontal layout, and these ideas finally took shape in the May issue, marking the start of our new chapter. Now, the question is, how will we continue to improve it? We hope to take the next step with our new team members, so that everyone can look forward to each new issue of the newsletter. (Ma)
Regarding the revision of Kirano-yu usage fees, scheduled for July 1, 2026.
Niseko Station Front Hot Spring "Kirano-yu" has been operating as a local public bathhouse since its opening in 2001, providing a place for hot springs and relaxation for townspeople and tourists alike. We would like to inform you that we are planning to revise our usage fees as follows.
Review of usage fees
Due to factors such as price revisions at nearby hot spring facilities and an increase in tourists, the number of visitors to Kiranoyu has increased. In addition, taking into account the impact of rising material costs due to inflation, we will revise the usage fees for non-Niseko Town as shown in the table on the left, in order to ensure the stable and sustainable management of the facility in the future.
Niseko Town need to complete the necessary procedures.
For Niseko Town, the usage fee (admission fee) will remain unchanged, but they will need to go through the procedure to obtain a card to prove they are Niseko Town.

National Health Insurance is a system in which all members cooperate to cover the necessary medical expenses so that people can receive medical care without worry when they get sick or injured. The 2026 Economic Census - Activity Survey will be conducted.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will conduct the "2026 Economic Census - Activity Survey" as of June 1, 2026. Management status of general waste final disposal sites
Last year, no crushed non-combustible materials were transported to the final disposal site.
Currently, the landfill site has filled approximately 90% of its landfill capacity in the 25 years since it began operation. All of the waste is now disposed of in Kutchan Town.
The water used at the disposal site is cleaned and then released into the river.
At the final disposal site, water is sprayed to prevent the scattering of waste and to reduce its harmfulness. The sprayed water is collected at a water treatment facility on the premises, purified, and then discharged into the river. (Table 1)
The future of final disposal sites
When the final disposal site was first constructed, it was expected to be full by the end of fiscal year 2009. However, due to the trends in landfill volume to date and the cessation of incineration ash delivery due to the conversion of combustible waste into solid fuel, the period of use has been extended (Table 2). As of fiscal year 2018, final disposal has been carried out at a private facility.
Going forward, we plan to consider how to make effective use of the current final disposal site facilities and grounds. We ask for your continued cooperation in reducing non-burnable waste and bulky waste, and in separating recyclable waste, in order to protect the local environment.

One thing that is missing in June and December is national holidays. Article 1 of the Act on National Holidays states, "The Japanese people, who constantly strive for freedom and peace, hereby establish days for the entire nation to celebrate, give thanks for, or commemorate, in order to cultivate beautiful customs and build a better society and a richer life, and these days shall be called 'National Holidays'."
Currently, this law designates 16 national holidays per year. Some of these holidays have fixed dates, such as Children's Day on May 5th, while others, like Marine Day on the third Monday of July, are designated by month and day of the week to ensure a long weekend each year. Incidentally, Marine Day was established in 1996 through a legal amendment in 1995, and has been observed on the third Monday of July since 2003. Furthermore, Article 2 of the same law stipulates the name and purpose of each national holiday. For example, the purpose of Marine Day is to express gratitude for the blessings of the sea and to pray for the prosperity of Japan, a maritime nation, while the purpose of Mountain Day on August 11th is to provide an opportunity to appreciate mountains and express gratitude for their blessings.
National holidays are not just days off; understanding their meaning and origins can also be an opportunity to deepen our understanding of society and history.

In conjunction with the nationwide simultaneous information transmission test of the National Instant Warning System (J-ALERT), the town will conduct an automatic activation drill for disaster prevention radios. To quickly inform residents of emergency information announced by the national government, the disaster prevention radios will be automatically activated in conjunction with J-ALERT.

Riko Sasaki's Claire Paris Correspondence

I'm often asked, "What kind of work does Claire do?" and one easy way to explain it is through the "JET Program." We dispatch CIRs (Coordinators for International Relations), ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers), and SEAs (Sports Exchange Officers), who are well-known in Niseko Town, to various local governments.
From March to April, together with the Embassy of Japan in France, the Japanese language test and selection process for participants of the 2026 JET Program
I was involved in the selection process. Although there are many applicants in France, the number of positions available is still small, and only about 6 people are hired nationwide each year.
There are no other options. Furthermore, even among those options, there are not many local governments that offer positions where you can actually use French. For this reason, the JET Program in France requires not only Japanese and French language skills, but also a high level of English proficiency. All of the applicants this time were highly proficient in both Japanese and English. During the selection process, I spent a lot of time discussing with the embassy, my superiors, and my colleagues, but there were times when I wondered if I was worthy of selecting such excellent individuals.
French is widely spoken in Africa and Canada, and with approximately 396 million Francophones (French speakers), it is the fourth most spoken language in the world. Currently, Anna, a CIR from Belgium, is playing a very active role in Niseko Town, and we hope that through the JET Program, French will become an even more familiar language for everyone in the future!

Volcanic disaster prevention – In preparation for the opening of the mountain climbing season –
The "mountain opening" ceremony, which signals the start of the mountain climbing season, is a landmark event where people pray for safety and officially begin entering the mountains. From this day onward, many people enjoy mountain climbing and nature walks.
While volcanoes offer blessings such as beautiful scenery and hot springs, eruptions can cause damage from falling rocks and pyroclastic flows, and volcanic ash can affect crops, transportation, and essential services even in areas far from the volcano. August 26th, "Volcanic Disaster Prevention Day," is a day to deepen our preparedness and understanding of such volcanic disasters.
When going near a volcano, check the volcano's characteristics and activity status in advance using the internet or your smartphone.
Therefore, when climbing, be sure to prepare equipment such as helmets and goggles in advance.

Constellation Memorial Concert: "A Moment of Sound Filled with Light"
Takeo Arishima passed away on June 9, 1923. The anniversary of his death is commemorated by the Constellation Memorial Day. The first half of the concert will feature pieces such as "Gunjō" and "Kaze no Toorimichi," while the second half will include "Drinking Song" from the opera "La Traviata" and the song "Nuit d'etoiles."

Niseko Town National Farmland Restructuring Project Promotion Reformation Letter
■ Area to be developed: 1,490 ha
■Project period: 14 years from 2014 (planned)
Niseko Town National Farmland Reorganization and Development Project Promotion Association General Meeting and District Promotion Committee meeting for fiscal year 2026 were held!
The general meeting of the organizing committee for fiscal year 2026 was held at the town community center on April 9th. Twenty-nine people attended, including guests of honor, representatives and deputy representatives from each district, and representatives from the Otaru Development and Construction Department's Shiribeshi Central Agricultural Development Office. The meeting discussed and approved the reports submitted by the secretariat and the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026. The Otaru Development and Construction Department, which oversees the project, introduced its staff and explained the details of this year's project, followed by an exchange of opinions with the attendees.
Furthermore, district promotion committee meetings were held in all eight districts (four venues) from April 20th to 23rd, with 41 farmers participating in the project in attendance. At the committee meetings, the secretariat explained matters such as reports and project cost burdens, and the Otaru Development and Construction Department explained the fields scheduled for construction this fiscal year, followed by a question and answer session.
Now in its 12th year since construction began, the project is steadily progressing towards completion. We, as the organizing committee, will continue to work even harder to ensure the project's successful completion.

Niseko Town Kento Tanaka
When I meet people in the community, they sometimes ask me things like, "Are you getting enough sleep?" or "Being mayor must be tough." It's true that there's no end to the things I think about and worry about, but strangely enough, I feel fulfilled every day. Being able to hear directly from the townspeople at community events and in casual conversations is a great source of satisfaction in this job. Lately, more and more children have been waving to me or calling out, "Mayor!" It's just a brief exchange, but each time it gives me the strength to keep going.
As a community where residents are self-governing, I believe it's important to address the feedback we receive without ambiguity and to clearly communicate the town's perspective. We will continue to engage in dialogue and carefully make decisions one by one.
Editor's Note
Although it's gradually getting warmer, the fluctuating temperatures and unpredictable weather make it difficult to decide what to wear. On windy days, something flying around makes my eyes itchy and my nose tingly. I've experienced countless springs already, but I'm still constantly at the mercy of the weather, and before I knew it, I've reached my third year in the Public Relations and Public Opinion Section. Even after three years, I still get nervous when I go out to do interviews... I can't help but wonder when I'll finally get used to it.
For the past two years, we've been working with a group of wonderful colleagues, experimenting and refining our newsletter to make it more accessible and easier for everyone to use in their daily lives. We've come up with various ideas, such as categorizing the content and using a horizontal layout, and these ideas finally took shape in the May issue, marking the start of our new chapter. Now, the question is, how will we continue to improve it? We hope to take the next step with our new team members, so that everyone can look forward to each new issue of the newsletter. (Ma)
