The start of a new school life!

At Niseko Elementary School and Kondo Elementary School, students raised their hands and answered enthusiastically when their homeroom teachers called their names. At Niseko Junior High School and Niseko High School, representatives of the new students spoke about their aspirations for their future school life.

A breath of exploration after school
~ "Wednesday Houkago Research Room" has started in Niseko Town
Starting in January, a new learning time was started after school as part of an initiative adopted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's "Classroom of the Future" demonstration project for fiscal 2024. It is called "Wednesday Houkago Research Room." Every other Wednesday from 3:30 p.m., for a total of six sessions, children and adults from the town gathered to have fun learning from each other.
In this class, we value the desire of children (and adults) to "know" and "try!", regardless of age, school, or region. The class is taught by Yasunobu Takatsuki of Tankyu Gakusha, known as a "cram school that doesn't teach exam preparation," and Ken Fukui, who has taught in Niseko Town many times. You can have a fun "learning" experience through a variety of themes, including art, arithmetic, science, history, living things, and Japanese. We plan to continue this class in cooperation with the town's Board of Education and many others, aiming to create an after-school experience where "play" and "learning" come together.
We want to provide a more free and creative learning environment for the children who will create the future. We would be delighted if this "Exploration Room" is the first step towards that goal.
The new fiscal year will start in May! Please feel free to contact us.

An original photo spot is born
In front of Niseko Station, you often see tourists taking commemorative photos with the nostalgic station building in the background. Especially when there are two people, they take turns taking photos of each person, or passersby and tourist association staff take photos. After seeing this scene, I thought, "It would be great to set up a selfie stand and create a frame that is unique to Niseko," and after a year, I decided to create it. Looking back, I realize that it is all thanks to the tourist association, the business operators who provided the workshop, and the three volunteer volunteers, but if you wish for it, it will come true!
We installed them during the Scenic Night lighting in February and at the Niseko Village event in March, and it made me very happy to see people taking photos in the frames. We think they will also be installed during the green season and Halloween in the fall, so please be sure to check out the original photo frames and hand-held panels! (Ito Risa)
"The 4th Minna no Shokudo" is being held!
On March 7th, we held the 4th Minna no Shokudo (Everybody's Dining Hall) at the Community Center. Many people came and we saw many smiling faces.
This time, we tried something new and wanted to make the event more accessible to foreigners, so we had a Nepalese person make Nepalese curry and serve it. The Nepalese curry, made with daikon radish and carrots from Niseko Town, was very popular. In addition, the 10 Grandma's family served dishes made with plenty of local vegetables.
I hope this will continue to be a place for local people to interact! Thank you to everyone who participated and helped out. (Takagi Nanami)
Mystery solving & snowshoeing
In early March, an event was held at Niseko Village that combined snowshoe walking with solving puzzles themed on animals in Niseko. The volunteers helped set up the venue, guided people to the points where the puzzles were set up, and took photos. Friends and families could be seen trying their hand at solving the puzzles in a friendly atmosphere.
Photo frames made by volunteers were also set up at the venue, making it a great photo spot for visitors to the event! (Sato Kyoka)
Niseko Cup GS Tournament held
The Niseko Cup GS competition was held at Niseko Moiwa Ski Resort for three days on March 16th, 22nd, and 23rd. We supported the venue and course setup, time measurement, course maintenance, etc. It was exciting to see the ski competition up close. We were impressed by the passionate skiing of the athletes.
The sight of them racing down the slopes was overwhelming, and we were able to see a fantastic performance that demonstrated the results of their practice. Thank you to all the people involved in the competition and the athletes. (Kizawa Daigo)

I've become the new captain!
2nd year: Nanami Takagi (from Sapporo) Assigned to Kiranoyu
I took over the baton from my fellow volunteer, Shimizu, who worked with great passion, and became the captain for the first half of this year.
During my year of volunteer work, I took on many challenges and was able to discover even more of the charms of the town. I hope to be able to spread that charm to many people and further engage with the local community. Thank you for your support.

Yoji Centre
A new semester has started
This year we welcomed 34 new students, starting with 134 students in total, including continuing students.
Every spring, the center is filled with the sounds of lively voices, but little by little the children become accustomed to life at the center, build relationships of trust, and begin to enjoy coming here.
When the children come to school with a smile on their face, the homeroom teacher and all the other staff members are filled with joy. We want to make this a place where the children can find lots of fun things to do and laugh happily together with their friends and teachers.
Let's play together a lot!

Child-rearing course "Yoga class"
We held a yoga class entitled "Everyday is busy and it's hard to find time for yourself, but why not use this time for yourself today - Self-healing Yoga" with Mr. Otomo, a local resident, as the instructor.
Participants commented, "My body felt loosened and relaxed," and "I felt refreshed and relieved of fatigue." It was a time that healed both the mind and body.

●This month's theme
Towards a childcare- and nursing-friendly workplace
The Child Care and Family Care Leave Act was revised in April 2025. Until now, the law allowed employees to take time off work to care for children or the elderly, but the scope of leave has been expanded.
For example, in the case of childcare, nursing leave for sick or injured children was previously available only until the child entered elementary school, but the amendments have expanded this to cover the period up to the end of the third grade of elementary school, and the exemption from overtime has also been expanded to include those raising children who have not yet entered elementary school. In addition, a telework system that allows employees to work from home has been added to the reduced-hours system for childcare. Furthermore, in the case of elderly care, workers with less than six months of continuous employment were not eligible, but this condition was abolished after the amendments, and systems have been put in place to help employees balance work and elderly care.
A little over 20 years ago, when I first became a lawyer, there was a male court employee who took childcare leave and took several months off work, and I was surprised at the time that there were such ikumen. Perhaps my sensibilities were old-fashioned at the time, but at the time it was unusual for men to take childcare leave. Time has passed since then, and now it has become commonplace. I hope that this revision will make it even easier to balance work and family life in the world.

Introduction of automatic water meter reading system
The town will introduce an automatic water meter reading system to automate the reading of water meters.
Currently, water meters installed in your home are read by a meter reader who visits the site in person, but the introduction of an automatic water meter reading system will enable meters to be read remotely via mobile phone lines. The automatic water meter reading system will make it possible to collect data such as meter readings, leak warnings, and abnormal water volume signals, leading to more efficient meter readings and early detection of water leaks within the home.
■ Installation work period: From around June 2025
・We will install the water meter even if you are not at home, as soon as we have confirmed the location of the water meter display. We may visit you on a holiday, so we ask for your cooperation.
There will be no water outages due to construction.
- There will be no charge to users for the installation of the automatic meter reading system.
The transition to automatic water meter reading is scheduled to take place from April 2026.
An example of a smart meter installation is shown on the left. The installation method varies depending on the installation location.

Advance preparation using "early warning information"
The Meteorological Observatory publishes early warning information (possibility of warning level) on the Japan Meteorological Agency's website and elsewhere, in two levels: "High" or "Medium," based on the possibility of the occurrence, within the next five days, of warning-level phenomena that could pose a danger to life and have a major impact on society, such as heavy rain, heavy snow, strong winds (snow), high waves, and high tides.
``High'' is issued when there is a high possibility of an alert-level phenomenon occurring, and ``Medium'' is issued when the possibility is not as high as ``High'' but is still recognized to a certain extent. You can use this as a reference for travel, events, outdoor work, etc.
When a "high" or "medium" storm level is announced, please pay attention to the latest information released by the meteorological observatory and take extra measures to prepare for a disaster.

Activities of a town development company!
Introducing the Niseko Town members!
My name is Hideki Hinoura and I joined the company in April this year. I moved to Niseko Town in September 2023. I worked as a volunteer for a year and a half after that. I was worried about whether to continue as a volunteer for the rest of my time, but I decided to graduate because I wanted to continue to be involved in the future city of Niseko Mirai.
As a volunteer, I mainly supported events in the town, and last year I was a team leader. It was a very busy time, but through the volunteer and event team, I was able to interact with many people, which has become an invaluable asset.
I think that moving to Niseko can bring a little anxiety along with dreams and goals. I myself could not hide my confusion in the different environment. I think that moving to Niseko Town as a volunteer helped me to wipe away some of my anxiety. I am where I am today thanks to the help of the volunteers and all the people involved. Thank you very much.
Before moving here, I worked in the food and beverage industry for about 20 years in Tokyo and Yokohama. My main focus was on service and cooking, mainly wine, and I have always valued hospitality. Niseko Town will be a completely different world from before, but I will continue to value hospitality as before and would like to help with relationships such as "people and people," "people and things," "people and society," and "people and nature." If you see me around town, please feel free to say hello. I look forward to your continued support.

Stop the illegal radio waves!
Radio waves from unlicensed radio stations (illegal radio waves) not only have a negative impact on our daily lives, such as interfering with mobile phones, televisions, and radios, but also threaten our lives by disrupting important wireless communications that affect human life and property, such as those for police, fire departments, emergency services, disaster prevention, and traffic.
The Hokkaido Regional Bureau of Telecommunications, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, monitors radio waves and strives to maintain a proper radio environment. Please feel free to contact us if you have any problems or concerns regarding radio waves.

Note
Be careful of accidents
Many people get lost while picking wild vegetables in May and June. Please be sure to take note of the following points and be fully prepared.
Precautions when picking edible wild plants
○ Be sure to let your family and friends know where you are going and what time you will be home.
○ Don't go alone, go out with more than one person.
○ Wear bright, eye-catching clothing and prepare for the cold when going out.
○ Carry bear bells, etc., and never enter areas indicated by caution signs.
Carry a compass and a cell phone (including spare batteries), as well as a whistle, radio, emergency food, lighting equipment, etc. just in case.
Let people know your location
We recommend carrying tools (mirrors, towels, flares, etc.) (reflecting light during a search and waving a towel as a signal are particularly effective)
if you lose your way
If you get lost, try to conserve your energy by remaining motionless (it is especially dangerous in dark places).
○Wait for rescue in a safe place, such as behind a rock, out of the wind and rain.

pension news
Exemption and deferral applications must be made every year.
The national pension insurance premium for fiscal year 2025 is 17,510 yen per month.
The National Pension has a system that exempts or defers the payment of premiums when income is low or when it is financially difficult to pay premiums due to unemployment, etc. When using these systems, in principle, applications must be made every year, except for those who have already received a full exemption or payment postponement and wish to continue applying.
Exemption applications can be made going back up to the past two years (two years and one month) (the same applies to the student payment exemption).
Please note that if you delay your application, you may not be able to receive your disability pension in the event of an emergency, or you may not be able to receive special exemptions such as unemployment benefits.
For more information, please contact the Pension Dial.

hello mayor
Wishes for the adults of the future
Graduation and entrance ceremonies for elementary, junior high and high schools in the town were held at each school, making use of their respective traditions and characteristics, with the attendance of all parents. Graduation and entrance ceremonies have different atmospheres and convey different emotions, but if you watch closely, you can see the tension and excitement of the children from their gestures and expressions.
I believe that the key to creating a society where we respect and help each other is the teachings of "mutual aid" left by the literary master Takeo Arishima in Niseko. A society in which basic human rights and human dignity are ignored and slander is rampant is expanding. I hope that the children who leave the beautiful scenery and rich natural environment of Niseko Town will become "adults who are kind to people and nature" who are filled with tolerance and compassion.
Niseko Town Kenya Katayama

Food and Nutrition Vol.32
The importance of eating breakfast
Do you eat a good breakfast every day?
Some people don't eat breakfast in the morning because they're busy and don't have time, they don't have an appetite, or they're on a diet. In Niseko Town, it has been reported that 7.6% of men and 5.3% of women skip breakfast. Skipping breakfast can have a variety of effects on the body, including "not being able to concentrate," "being irritable," and "being prone to constipation." In order to be active in the morning, it's important to make sure you eat breakfast every day.
[Nutrition guidance at Yoji Centre]
In order to let children know the importance of breakfast, we held a seminar on the nutritional status of children in the middle and senior years Yoji Centre.
I also spoke at the "Infant Nutrition Class" held monthly with the aim of improving morale. When I told the children that there are many benefits to eating breakfast, such as "being able to play energetically," "not getting irritated," and "being able to listen to the teacher properly," I heard a variety of responses from the children, such as "I eat breakfast every day," and "I had rice balls today." However, some children answered, "I don't eat in the morning because I want to sleep," so I also talked about the importance of going to bed early and getting up early. I promised the children to tell their families to eat something, even if it's just a banana or yogurt, before coming to Yoji Centre, and to try to go to bed early and get up early.
[Food Education Month]
Every June is Food Education Month. This year too, we will be displaying posters at the Community Center and Asobook about the importance of eating breakfast, so please take a look.

Editor's Note
A seasonal feature of May is the "May Sickness." I feel like I get all out of sorts every year around this time. Looking at recent events, I've found my own way of dealing with this May Sickness.
The other day, a friend invited me to go to an artist's live concert. This concert was in a new genre for me, so everything was fresh to me. From the singing and dancing to the venue's production, I was able to experience a different kind of excitement and unity from any concert I've ever been to, and I feel like my worldview has expanded.
Diving into a new environment or experience may make you feel anxious or nervous, but taking that first step will give you new stimulation, refresh your mind and body, and enrich your life.
I hope that in the coming season, I will consciously try new things and spend the time with a calm mind. (M)
