◆Earthquake Information
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 occurred off the coast of Sanriku at 4:52 PM on April 20, 2026 (Reiwa 8).
・As a result of this earthquake, the likelihood of a new large-scale earthquake occurring in the assumed epicenter area of a megathrust earthquake, stretching from off the coast of Nemuro in Hokkaido to off the coast of Sanriku in the Tohoku region, is thought to be relatively higher than normal.
A tsunami warning was briefly issued for the eastern, central, and western Pacific coasts of Hokkaido, but it has now been lifted.
The "Hokkaido/Sanriku Offshore Earthquake Warning" is still in effect.
In the event of a major earthquake in the future, there is a possibility of strong shaking and tsunamis occurring within Hokkaido. Please refer to the Hokkaido website for earthquake preparedness information.
・ Niseko Town recorded an earthquake intensity of 2.
According to Hokkaido Electric Power Company, there has been no impact on their power facilities due to this earthquake.
・In the event of a major disaster like this, rumors and fake news may spread on social media. Please verify primary information yourself from the Japan Meteorological Agency and other government agencies, and be careful not to spread secondary, tertiary, or hearsay information carelessly.
