北海道初・日本最北 　商業的コットン試験栽培に成功

Takahashi Farm, which is supported by Niseko Town as part of its "Business and Tourism Promotion Project," has succeeded in growing purely domestic cotton outdoors in Hokkaido, a place that was previously thought to be difficult to grow.
 
　商業的コットン栽培（※1）は北海道で前例がなく、露地での栽培は日本最北（※2）。これまで日本最北と言われていた宮城県から大きく更新しました。世界有数のスキーリゾートで作り出すパウダースノーのような「NISEKO SNOW COTTON™（※3）」で、ニセコ町の新たな魅力を発信します。
　かつて日本で栄えたコットン栽培ですが、現在国内でのコットン自給率はほぼ0％と推定されており（※4）、純国産コットンの希少性が高まっています。近年の気候変動もあり、長年栽培が難しいとされてきた北海道でも、ニセコ町で長年培ってきたメロンの栽培技術を応用し、コットンを作ることが可能になりました。
Takahashi Farm produces and sells melons, a local specialty. In 2023, they began trial cultivation of cotton in greenhouses and outdoors, and after three years, both trials were successful. In 2026, the 100th anniversary of their founding, they plan to release cotton products in collaboration with local businesses in approximately five stores in the town. In the future, they plan to work on revitalizing the region and promoting sustainable agriculture through cotton, such as planning workshops and harvesting experience events, and will attempt to create a new brand for the town.
